★Super high-quality soundboard!!
Ten years have already passed since their 2015 tour, which featured their recent masterpiece, “STANDING IN THE BREACH.” In March of that year, they performed in Japan, and not only were many items released, but they were also later compiled into the official album “THE ROAD EAST LIVE IN JAPAN.” For Japanese fans, this year is undoubtedly one in which the impression of their Japanese performances remains strong.
On the other hand, the tour changed direction from autumn onwards. Reflecting the album’s strong country influences, the opening act featured the duo of Larry Campbell and Theresa Williams. Furthermore, they didn’t just stay as opening acts; Larry Campbell fully participated on steel guitar. Larry Campbell played in the first half of the main set and in the final songs, “Running On Empty” and “Take It Easy,” creating a collaborative section.
In the first half of the show, they performed “These Days,” “My Opening Farewell,” and Warren Zevon’s “Mama Couldn’t Be Persuaded.” The unexpected lineup was particularly striking, with Teresa Williams, not Jackson, taking the lead vocals on “My Opening Farewell.”
At the time, many recordings of their Japanese performances were available, so little was known about the latter half of the tour. However, in May of this year, stereo soundboard recordings of two days of their September Port Chester performances were suddenly unearthed.
The greatest appeal of this recording lies in its sound quality. Despite being a PA output soundboard recording, it not only boasts clarity but also naturally reproduces the atmosphere of the venue. With the excellent balance typical of recent recordings, it effectively conveys the live performance’s atmosphere.
The album offers plenty to listen to in terms of content, and is characterized by a sound that is more country-oriented compared to their performances in Japan. Furthermore, towards the end, Larry Campbell engages in a guitar battle with then-guitarist Val McCallum on “Running On Empty” and “Take It Easy.”
In true Jackson style, the setlist also changed. On the first day, he played “If I Could Be Anywhere” from “Standing in the Bleach,” as well as the classic “In the Shape of a Heart.” On the second day, however, “Sky Blue and Black” was added, while “The Pretender” was omitted, resulting in a very unusual setlist for his recent concerts.
Furthermore, the recording of “Leaving Winslow” includes a charming moment where Jackson makes a mistake in the lyrics right after starting to sing, muttering it self-deprecatingly. These kinds of details are captured with the clarity only a soundboard recording can provide.
Now, 10 years after the release of the classic album “STANDING IN THE BREACH,” two concerts from the tour have been unearthed in this stereo soundboard album that has astonished fans worldwide. The sound quality and performance are superb!
