1973 Los Angeles performance on Bonzo’s birthday has long been known as “Bonzo’s Birthday,” and multiple sources have been identified. Furthermore, a newly discovered source, known as the “BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER,” is the main source recorded this time. As exemplified by Blueberry Hill, Los Angeles has its own artisans, and there are several performances with multiple sources for the same show. However, this newly discovered source, released on May 31, 1973, while later, is superior in sound quality to any previous source. There are also fewer cuts due to tape changes, making it undoubtedly the best Bonzo’s audience sound source.
While the sound quality and content are nearly perfect, there are some cuts. This work supplements these with additional sources. Disc 1 includes the opening portion before the show, about 30 seconds into “No Quarter.” Since this performance has multiple sources, there is ample material for supplementation. Disc 2 compensates for a mere 20-second gap in “Dazed And Confused” and three missing sections in “Moby Dick.” The cuts in “Moby Dick” were particularly complex, but they were edited seamlessly, and both are included in their entirety. The opening section of “Happy Birthday Bonzo,” a key aside from the main source, was missing, and the recording was only made midway through. This was also supplemented with a separate source for a complete recording. Fortunately, Disc 3 features no cuts, and the only supplemented sections are the hustle and bustle of the audience waiting for the encore. Again, as mentioned above, the main “Barry Goldstein Master” contains minimal cuts, and the sound quality is excellent.
Discs 4 and 5 contain soundboard recordings. When I first listened to “Bonnaise,” I was surprised to find a soundboard recording. Until now, even with soundboard recordings, the sound was generally narrow and centered. In contrast, this release boasts sound quality that surpasses previous releases. While the content remains the same, I believe there is a significant advantage in sound quality. This
release features the “BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER,” a first appearance of Bonzo’s Los Angeles performance on May 31, 1973, his birthday (he was 21 years old), recorded with exceptionally high sound quality. The cuts are complemented by a separate source for a complete recording. This is the masterpiece of Bonzo’s birthday party, complete with soundboard recordings. A beautiful picture disc for permanent preservation.
