Description
Walsh Auditorium, Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ, USA 30th September 1973 TRULY PERFECT SOUND
It was completely overlooked that JEMS had unearthed a fantastic live recording of Graham Nash from 1973. It’s an amazing audience recording capturing his solo performance in New Jersey in September 1973.
What’s more, the sound quality is surprisingly good. Although it’s monaural, the recording captures the sound image of the acoustic live performance so well that it would normally deserve to be released on a pressed CD.
It’s amazing that such a high-quality audience recording exists from the vintage era of 1973. What makes it even more precious is that it’s a solo live performance by Nash, and not by CSNY or Crosby & Nash.
Moreover, despite being a simple acoustic guitar and piano solo performance, the energy was so incredible it made me wonder if it was even real. It was so intense that I doubt even CSNY or his close friend Neil Young’s solo performances have ever been this exciting.
The opening of this incredibly happy live show was a very rare acoustic version of “Pre-Road Downs,” and the excitement it generated was absolutely phenomenal. The sense of presence was truly amazing.
In this situation, especially if they were to play “Teach Your Children” in the middle of the show, the venue would practically explode.
Even just from what we’ve seen so far, you should have realized what an amazing live show it was, but the surprise guest who appeared towards the end was none other than Dave Mason! Mason, who greatly admires CSNY, had previously participated in Nash’s albums, and he also played guitar on “Oh! Camil (The Winter Soldier)” on the album “WILD TALES,” which was released six months later.
Conversely, Nash had also contributed backing vocals to several tracks on Mason’s acclaimed album “It’s Like You Never Left,” which was released a few months later, so it was actually quite natural that he would be invited to perform at Nash’s live show.
The first song Nash and Mason performed was the new song “Every Woman.” This would later become one of Mason’s signature songs, and this was likely its live debut, making it an extremely rare moment as it featured Nash, who had also provided backing vocals on the album. The next song they performed was the aforementioned new song “Oh! Camil (The Winter Soldier),” which felt like a very natural progression.
And when Mason performed “Only You Know And I Know” to conclude the show, the atmosphere became so electric that it seemed as though he might steal the show. However, thanks to Nash’s good character, he graciously handed the spot over to Mason while supporting him with backing vocals.
The show, which was far more exciting than a typical acoustic performance, ended with the killer “Chicago.” At this point, the venue erupted in a massive singalong. The excitement completely went off the charts. With such a fantastic performance and song selection, plus the surprise appearance of Mason, and even the sound quality was superb. This is undoubtedly the best discovery in Nash’s history, thanks to JEMS!
