Milwaukee Auditorium, Milwaukee, WI. USA 22nd February 1977 TRULY PERFECT SOUND

JEMS has now become a treasure trove of rare classic rock recordings, and this February and March, they uploaded three different recordings from Bruce Springsteen’s 1977 tour. The 1977 tour featured performances that were so intense they even surpassed the Darkness tour, and it is highly regarded among Springsteen fans, even more so than Darkness.

However, unlike Darkness and the 1975 tour, no soundboard recordings have been unearthed from this year.

On the other hand, this tour has the advantage of having audience recordings that boast surprisingly superb sound quality even when listened to today. Our store has released all of the Boston shows from the final part of the 1977 tour on pressed discs, and both “LEGENDS FROM THE MUSIC HALL” and “ARE YOU READY FOR THE FINAL MOMENT?” have been very well received for their undeniably superb sound quality and for capturing Springsteen’s energetic performances.

However, what’s amazing about the 1977 tour is that the superb quality audience recordings aren’t limited to just this one day. There are several other audience recordings of astonishing quality from about a month prior to the Boston days, and the incredibly close sound image is so powerful that it surpasses even the Boston recordings, making these recordings very much loved by fans. Fortunately, the recordings that JEM has uploaded this time are precisely those recordings. Of the three, the St. Louis Fox Theatre recording from February 28th was previously released by our store and recently reappeared as a gift item. (“WILD FOX EVENING”)

The release this time is a superb recording of their live performance in Milwaukee on February 22nd. Of course, given the high quality of this audience recording, it’s not the first time such a recording has been released; fans may remember the title “ACTION IN THE STREETS”.

Recently, a fan-made remaster of this title, titled “THE RETURN TO BOMBSCARE ARENA,” has been circulating online. The remaster, produced by a label called “Ev2,” has been touted on fan sites as having a “dramatic improvement in sound quality,” but in reality, it’s just a matter of applying heavy compression, increasing the volume, and creating a more flashy sound.

However, this JEM recording, being based on a low-generation master, boasts a truly dramatic improvement in sound quality. It’s a completely different level of natural and warm sound compared to “THE RETURN TO…”, demonstrating the difference from the superficial sound processing often found in fan remasters.

Moreover, the three performances uploaded by JEMS, including this one, have an unusually clear sound, and that’s because these recordings were made by Springsteen’s tour crew with permission—essentially “official audience recordings.” Unfortunately, there are brief cuts in “She’s The One” and “Rosalita” where the tape is changed, but even taking that into account, the exceptional quality is overwhelming.

The 1977 tour, which has garnered support from fans for its upbeat Springsteen performances that are said to surpass even the Darkness Tour, is certainly worthy of a limited-edition pressed CD release if it can be heard with this level of quality. During this period, Springsteen’s recording activities were frozen due to a lawsuit with his manager, Mike Appel, and as if to express the constraints he felt, he performs the Animals cover “It’s My Life” with an almost somber atmosphere.

From there, the energy gradually builds to an upbeat level, and the long and intense “Backstreets” is simply a breathtaking performance! It’s truly a treat for fans to be able to hear this wild 1977 live performance with such superb clarity and sound quality.

Finally, the bonus track includes a third official audience recording uploaded by JEMS from the February 17th show at Litchfield. This show is famous for former Ronettes member Ronnie Spector joining in on vocals during the second half of the performance, and it was also included as a bonus track on “THE RETURN TO BOMBSCARE ARENA.”

According to JEMS, they didn’t record the entire live performance on this particular day, so they uploaded a complete version by combining it with a different, lower-quality recording. This release also includes Ronnie Spector’s appearance, and naturally, the sound quality is improved. It also includes “Born To Run,” which was played immediately after her performance but was cut from the bonus track on “THE RETURN TO…”, making for a more fulfilling bonus track selection. As a result, this is a fantastic title composed entirely of superb recordings from 1977, with impeccable sound quality and performance! Enjoy these top-notch recordings to the fullest.
