Description
Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA, USA 10th November 1974 PERFECT SOUND
NEW SOURCE!!
The new sound source unearthed this February from George Harrison’s 1974 North American tour, which had long since ceased to be released, was enough to literally surprise enthusiasts. It was the Long Beach Arena on November 10th, known as one of the best performances on the 1974 tour. The release of “LET’S HEAR ONE FOR LORD BUDDA” from the TAKRL label made the wonderful performance known in real time.
But sadly, it’s far from a complete live recording. Although it was certainly an audience recording with very good sound quality at the time, it had its pros and cons, such as the jeers flying around the recorder being harsh. Above all, the splendor of the performance was clearly conveyed from this LP alone, so I think that maniacs around the world wanted to hear the whole live performance even more.
In 2025, when such things were being forgotten, our JEMS team suddenly released a new audience recording from Long Beach, causing a stir among enthusiasts around the world. If it is an excavated sound source now, even if the sound image is blurry and there are cuts, it will be appreciated for its historical value. However, this newly excavated sound source has good sound quality and the performance is in a miraculous recording state with no cuts.
As expected, the sound image is not as close as the “LET’S HEAR ONE FOR LORD BUDDA” LP, but the recording quality is still excellent and powerful. Also, there are no people nearby making noise or heckling. The quality makes you want to murmur “The sound is good.” And yet, all the performances are recorded without any cuts, which is really great for the 1974 audience.
The only drawback is that the bass is strong, especially Andy Newmark’s bass drum. So for this limited press CD release, the low range has been softened. This makes the performance’s contours more solid, and it’s easier to listen to without the thumping sound. If you compare it with “Something,” you’ll be able to feel the difference from the original sound source.
It’s clear from “Something” that George here in Long Beach is really high tension. Even the first half of the live performance, such as the energetic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Sue Me, Sue You Blues”, which is no exaggeration to call the best take of the tour, is overwhelming. Thanks to the previous LP, it has become common knowledge among enthusiasts that “Long Beach is a great performance”, but this new excavation once again makes us realize how wonderful the performance was on that day.
”Dark Horse”, which was not included on the LP and can now be heard for the first time on this recording, is also a wonderful performance, and “What Is Life”, which was also not included on the LP, is not only a high-tension performance, but also a rare scene in which George introduces the song title (which the audience is naturally delighted) before the start.
And the best part was that the Shankar Family’s part was also very exciting! It is often overlooked that the songs are not so-called raga-like, but are full of songs with vocals and ups and downs, making them easy to get into. However, here in Long Beach, the audience was so excited that they cheered loudly in the middle of “Cheparte”. It was a scene that proved George’s words, “The media wrote bad things about us, but the truth is that the audience was excited.”
Thus, the newly discovered audience, whose dream of finally being able to hear the complete Long Beach performance, one of George’s best performances in 1974, is fulfilled, is undoubtedly worthy of a press CD release. There are certainly other excellent audiences from this tour, such as Baton Rouge and Fort Worth, but the power of the performance and the amazing excitement created by this mono recording are also exceptional.
And the performance was the best. The first half of the show was full of energy and high tension. It is no exaggeration to say that the truth of the live performance, which was criticized in real time, is captured. This is no exaggeration to say that this is a new standard of George’s 74th tour!
