This week, we’re releasing not only the amazing footage of The Who’s 1979 MSG performance, but also a recording of a sizzling day in 1981. The 1981 recording, unearthed by JEMS, is a live performance in St. Austell, England, which would have been a tour of The Who’s home country.
There is a large venue called the Cornwall Coliseum in St. Austell, and many big names actually held concerts there in the 1980s. However, the newly discovered audience recording, although mono, captured a very homely atmosphere.
Although it is a large venue at the Coliseum level, the peaceful presence is very much like that of a regional city, and the sound image is close and very easy to hear.
And above all, the performance was super hot. The timing was right before the release of their first studio album since joining Kenny Jones, “FACE DANCES,” so they must have been in high spirits when they took to the stage.
Therefore, even though they were just about to be released, the performances of the new songs that were performed in rapid succession in the first half of the live show were all full of energy, with “Don’t Let Go the Coat” and “Another Tricky Day” being particularly impressive.
The audience’s warm applause for the new songs before they were even released was another sense of realism that can only be found in a regional city. The result was a live documentary with a unique charm: a passionate performance and a homey atmosphere.
After the release of the album, the arrangement of the new songs will be scattered and will change to a composition similar to the classic live video Rockpalast from 1981, but the content of the performance is much more substantial than Rockpalast in the first place.
After the series of new songs was over, “My Generation” exploded. And just when you thought the encore would start with “The Real Me,” Roger started singing “Bargain” in the same key. Then, just when you thought what would happen when they moved on to “The Punk and the Godfather,” they finally returned to the original “The Real Me,” which was thrilling.
In fact, “FACE DANCES” was released after the first tour of 1981, but at a meeting held at that time, Roger exploded with dissatisfaction with Kenny’s drumming, which led to a loss of unity in the band.
Before such a bad change occurred, this was a tremendous performance that overturned the image of The Who’s 1981 live performance, including that Rockpalast. This is a new excavation that enthusiasts must listen to!
