Speaking of Barry Goldstein’s record of The Who in 1976, “WINTERLAND 1976: BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER” is highly acclaimed by enthusiasts and continues to be a bestseller, but a new audience recording of another ’76 live performance by him has been unearthed! The new
Goldstein recording released by JEMS this time is from San Diego on October 7th. Of course, “SAN DIEGO 1976: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES” by Mike Millard, the legendary taper and his friend, has already been released on this day.
There, Millard was late, so JEMS patched in another recording from the same day at the time of release, but this time Goldstein recorded another audience.
Interestingly, he also missed the beginning of the opening song “I Can’t Explain,” but at least he captured the live performance in a more perfect state than Millerd. The sound image has a slight sense of distance, but while it loses to the stereo mirrored recording in terms of clarity, this mono recording is better in terms of the closeness and power of the sound.
Even more surprising, Goldstein’s recording of “My Wife” sung by John Entwistle has a powerful bass sound that is closer to his own! This suggests that his bass was ringing out at a considerable volume in the venue, but it was surprising that the volume was recorded with a solid grain without saturating.
This phenomenon was also seen in the Millerd recording “SAN DIEGO 1976~”, but it was surprising that the Goldstein recording this time was more balanced. In fact, in the Millerd recording, John’s sound was too loud until the “TOMMY” part.
On the other hand, the volume of Roger Daltrey’s voice increases from the “TOMMY” part, and his passionate singing is clearly conveyed in the song in which he is the protagonist. Because it is a mono recording, his powerful singing voice comes closer as a mass of sound.
In addition, the other source used at the beginning of the mirrored recording was so far away that the sound image was blurred, but this one is much easier to hear. The recording quality, which highlights the good balance of the performance throughout, is a major attraction.
Of course, there is no doubt that the mono audience has a vintage flavor in front of the stereo feeling and clarity of the mirrored recording, but on the other hand, there is no doubt that it is a first-time sound source with plenty of appeal that allows you to fully enjoy the power of mono.
And on this day, the performance was sharp, as expected at the end of the tour, but listening to the light development centered on Pete in “Summertime Blues” and the medley “My Generation” in mono is also exceptional. A newly excavated Goldstein master that will truly impress maniacs!
