☆The Who’s “MY GENERATION” is an essential album for any discussion of 1960s UK rock. This ultimate sound quality edition is now available on Classic Records’ test press! This ultra-rare box set, limited to just 20 sets worldwide, is based on the mono master tape. Sound quality was prioritized above all else, resulting in an insanely detailed four-disc set, including a test press, 12-inch 45 rpm, 200g heavyweight vinyl, single-sided pressing, and a total of four discs. While boasting the ultimate sound, the fact that it’s a test press and only 20 sets means that most people on the planet are unaware of its sound makes it a true Pandora’s box! Enjoy this historic masterpiece in the ultimate sound! There’s no better version of “MY GENERATION” than this one.
The Who’s memorable first album, “MY GENERATION,” was different from their later albums in that it was produced under a contract with Shel Talmy, a popular producer at the time. As a result, the master tapes were not under the control of the Who, and despite being an album by such a big name, it was an unfortunate situation that meant it could never be reissued for a long time.
While this album is now officially released in both mono and stereo mixes, it wasn’t until the dawn of the 21st century that this became a reality. Finally, the master tapes were released from Talmy’s custody, and the original mono mix was borrowed and released in 2005 by the renowned Classic Records, crafted using a thorough all-analog process.
This alone was a rare item and a record of exceptional sound quality, but the ultimate release among them all was this “test pressing,” a “12-inch 45 rpm,” a “200g heavyweight vinyl,” a “single-sided pressing,” and a “four-disc set”—literally, an otherworldly, ultimate format! Naturally, only 20 sets were ever produced, making this mega-rare version a magnet for exorbitant prices among collectors. It was the ultimate set, available only to 20 people in the world.

And what’s even more important is that the sound quality is the best of all the “MY GENERATION” releases. After all, this album was originally released as an LP with a running time of no more than 40 minutes. Going back to the master tapes, and then recreating it as a 12-inch, 45 rpm, single-sided, four-disc set, with the high-quality pressing that Classic Records is known for, it’s no wonder the sound quality isn’t great. In fact, it’s almost impossible to improve the sound quality any further.
For the reasons mentioned above, this album was rarely re-released until the 21st century, which ironically resulted in the master tapes being spared from deterioration. This recording was made on a high-quality, experimental 12-inch 45 rpm single-sided press set of four discs, so the sound quality seems to jump out of the disc, creating a truly exceptional sound. The difference is obvious just by listening to the intro “Ja-la-n” to “The Kids Are Alright.”
The current official mono remaster seemed to be quite good, but the difference in sound from this test pressing was too great to be a contest. It’s not just “natural”; you’ll be stunned at how different the freshness and richness of the sound are in the same mono. It’s surprising how spacious it feels, even though it’s mono.
The high-quality pressing by Classic Records is truly impressive, and the sound quality is breathtaking, making full use of the master tape. It even surpasses the original Brunswick release from 1965! If you get an original from the 1960s in poor condition, it can often end up sounding outdated, so this is a stunning victory for Classic Records, who fully utilize the potential of the master tape with minimal deterioration, delivering a brilliant sound.
On the other hand, while it is an extremely valuable and high-quality item, it is not only difficult to obtain and expensive, but listening to a 40-minute album on four 12-inch 45 rpm discs is insane as a music software, and there is no denying that there are some inconveniences as a result of prioritizing sound quality. However, with this release, you can easily listen to this otherworldly high-quality sound on a single CD, which is just too convenient. And yet, the overwhelming high quality sound remains the same.
Of course, the scratch noise that occurs when recording from LP has been thoroughly removed, but the extremely clear and expansive sound of this album has been completely preserved in the CD. Enjoy the undeniably top-notch sound quality and mega-rare mono version of “MY GENERATION” with peace of mind, and immerse yourself in it! A must-listen and must-have!
