Live at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA 11th June 1974 TRULY PERFECT SOUND
★UPGRADE
The Who were supposed to continue touring in 1974 to promote their album “Quadrophenia,” but they only toured Europe in February and instead moved on to working on the movie version of “Tommy.” As a result, they had very few live performances that year, but in June they booked four shows at Madison Square Garden, as if to vent their frustrations from being stuck in the movie studio.
Among them, the masterpiece that captured the June 11th event with a superb stereo audience recording is “MSG 1974”. For the reasons mentioned above, there were few live performances, and the number of live recordings and items was also small for The Who in 1974. Until then, the only option was Charlton in May (also waiting for the release of a new improved version), and “MSG 1974” was a new recording that boasted surprisingly high sound quality.
More than 10 years have passed since the release of this work, which was highly praised by enthusiasts as an Odins album with extremely clear sound quality recorded in stereo at a time when sound sources were already limited. On the contrary, it has become a hard-to-obtain record, and even those who are not enthusiasts have been calling for a reissue of this precious 1974 live performance. This is especially true after more than 10 years since its release.
This recording should have been released last year, the 50th anniversary of the live performance, but it was delayed until this year because a separate recording of the same day was finally available. In fact, the 2011 release was by the famous “GRAF ZEPPELIN”, and of course this time too, the masterpiece has been revived for the first time in a long time under his supervision. The 2011 release was also highly praised for the reasons mentioned above, but this time, the complete recording of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” has been realized for the first time by the discovery of another recording source! The cut that occurs around the 6 and a half minute mark of the song was literally painful, so it is great that it has finally been filled in.
The sound source used for this compensation was a mono recording, but GRAF ZEPPELIN achieved a wonderful connection with almost no sense of incongruity with the main stereo audience. This is his true colors. The 1974 audience album, which already boasts outstanding quality, can now be listened to to the end with peace of mind.
And the content of the live performance itself is extremely interesting. The composition is no longer one that promotes “QUADROPHENIA,” and the set list is filled with old hits from the album in moderation, which is unique to this time of year. At Charlton in May, some of the old repertoire seemed to lack rehearsal, but here they seem to have completely regained their sense, and the usual intense Who shines throughout the whole show.
And yet it’s really interesting that the “QUADROPHENIA” part suddenly starts with “Bell Boy”. Since “TOMMY” had made a big break in the US, the cheers for “Pinball Wizard” and “See Me Feel Me” were tremendous (they were also captured in an exquisite balance), but the fact that the concert ended with two songs from “QUADROPHENIA” shows the determination of the band led by Pete at the time.
Among the live recordings of The Who’s 1974, which are already limited in quality and quantity, the masterpiece Stereo Audience, which is rich in both sound quality and content, has been revived under the thorough supervision of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” as before. On the contrary, after so many years have passed, there may be more people who do not know the previous work “MSG 1974” or the original sound source itself with its attractive clear sound quality. One of the best live recordings from 1974 that can be confidently recommended to all enthusiasts has finally been revived!
REMASTERED BY GRAF ZEPPELIN
★The main source is the same excellent stereo Aud sound source as the previous version, but luckily there was another sound source from that day, albeit in mono, and the missing part of “Won’t Get” was filled in with that other sound source, realizing a complete recording of all the performance parts!
