Universal Ampitheatre, Los Angeles, CA, USA 24th August 1989 PRO-SHOT
The 1989 tour had often been reported negatively, with people saying it was just for the money and that Pete couldn’t play the electric guitar, but the “TOMMY” re-enactment show held at the Universal Amphitheater in LA in August was the turning point that led to it receiving rave reviews.
Unlike the regular 1989 concert, the first half of the concert featured a special setlist that recreated the album, and even featured some impressive guests.
Naturally, this special show was recorded and broadcast on the pay-per-view system, which was extremely popular at the time. It was later released as various software as “FEATURING THE ROCK OPERA TOMMY,” which further reaffirmed the appeal of the 1989 tour.
With the advent of the DVD era, it was released as a deluxe software called “TOMMY AND QUADROPHENIA LIVE” bundled with live footage from 1996, but that is now a thing of the past.
Thankfully, a fan of the 1989 tour has extracted the “TOMMY” live performance from the software and uploaded it to YouTube. Naturally, the image quality and sound quality are official quality, so it’s at a perfect level.
For the 1989 live footage from the VHS generation, this is more like the original image quality and easier to see than the current digital restoration.
Even more than that, the live performance itself is simply amazing. Since it’s a “TOMMY” live performance, Pete’s acoustic guitar formation works perfectly, and it’s truly fascinating that for the first time in the history of Who live performances, “TOMMY” is recreated in the acoustic atmosphere of the album.
The presence of the impressive guests, such as Steve Winwood, Billy Idol, and Patty Lavelle, is also a highlight, but the highlight is Elton John, who, just like in the film version, sings on “Pinball Wizard.”
The best part is Phil Collins, who is also a drummer and plays Uncle Ernie instead of Keith Moon, and his character is so funny that he seems to steal the show.
On the other hand, after the “TOMMY” part, which had a different set list from usual and featured guest appearances, and the second part of the regular set, Pete seemed to be released from his tension, and it was interesting to see how excited he was.
Above all, the band members at the time were still in their mid-40s, and looking back, they still look young. Roger, who is always light on his feet, is in a class of his own, but Pete, who jumps repeatedly with high energy, is also very supple in his legs and hips.
John also plays a unique bass line. It is also recognizable that Simon Phillips’ drums, who supported them, were a perfect match, making this the best professional shot video that truly captures the charm of the 1989 tour!
