Description
Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, USA 19th June 1969Â
★UPGRADE!!! This is a premium AUD at soundboard level.
Among the many live recordings of The Who in 1969, the one that has been eagerly awaited to be reissued and upgraded is the Fillmore West on June 19th. This day boasts the highest quality of audience recordings in 1969, and in 1996 the nostalgic Fire Power label released a paper jacket CD called “FLYING TO NEW YORK TO GO TO COURT”. There must be many enthusiasts who were blown away by the greatness of this recording with the same title.
The recording quality is so close that you might wonder, “Is this really a ’69 Aud?” What’s more, it’s a worthy masterpiece in that it captures the historical scenes and great performances of The Who’s live performances, which had just entered their heyday, and the performance of “TOMMY” at the historic venue, the Fillmore, with excellent sound quality.
However, it is true that this is a vintage audience recording released in the mid-90s, and while the sound is very similar, there is some wow and flutter, hiss, and low pitch that seem to have been amplified through the trade of cassette dubbing. The sound quality that seemed great when “FLYING TO~” was released in 1996 has become rough over time. If you are a fanatic, you may have felt that “FLYING TO~” was indeed great, but that the original sound source must have been of better quality.
In fact, the master tape of this sound source no longer exists, but fortunately there is a 1st gen. copy from the master. This was based on the version that was dubbed and circulated during the cassette trade era, which was the basis for the “FLYING TO…” paper jacket CD. In that respect, the file of the 1st gen. copy is in incomparably better condition than the original version, and above all, the sound quality is even better.
Based on this best copy, GRAF ZEPPELIN has begun work on the upgraded version that has been long awaited by Who maniacs around the world. Moreover, the subject this time is the vintage audience, which is his specialty. The 1st gen. copy was in much better condition than the previously released paper jacket version mentioned above, but the wow-flash that was still noticeable was thoroughly adjusted. In addition, the hiss noise was reduced because it was a 1st gen. copy… It’s an upgrade that is on a whole different level, and the pitch is accurate.
To tell the truth, the original recording had a swell of sound at the end of “Magic Bus” like a vintage audience, and the existing version concealed it by cutting it. It seems that this was unbearable to listen to in the old gen copy at that time, and the cut seems to have been a reasonable decision. This part was also recorded uncut this time, and at the same time, it is possible to hear it through, even if it is rough, which is unique to the 1st gen. copy.
And the bonus includes the first recording of the existing recording from the 17th. This had been credited as the 18th until now, but with the appearance of “FILLMORE WEST 1969 2ND NIGHT”, which was genuinely recorded on the 18th, the recording was corrected to the 17th. This audience recording is of a quality that is not as good as the 19th, but it has also been thoroughly restored by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. It was recorded in a much easier-to-listen-to state, and “Eyesight To The Blind” and other songs sound wilder than the next day.
Even so, the main sound source on the 19th was amazing. With the roughness, mainly hiss noise, wiped out, the audience, whose sound image was already so intense, approached so close that it could be mistaken for a sound board. It’s also a famous story, but this was one of the performances where Pete had the sound board recorded but burned it, so it was really fortunate that there was an Aud with a very close sound image on that day.
The highlight is the Who’s performance throughout the entire album. However, there are some incomplete parts in the arrangement of “Youngman Blues” and other songs, and it is rather pleasing that they do not reach the level of completion of Leeds. On the other hand, John’s “Boris The Spider”, which disappeared from the live repertoire for a while, is still being played during this period. And the energetic performance of the “TOMMY” part… the joy of hearing these with a superb audience. The most important sound source that captured The Who before Woodstock in the best sound quality has finally been upgraded by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. It is the revival of a famous audience that is just like a sound board!

REMASTERED BY GRAF ZEPPELIN
★’69 Fillmore West released 2nd Night a few years ago, but this is the final night.
This is a live performance released by the nostalgic Fire Power in the ’90s, but the sound quality has improved significantly!
According to the file memo, it is said to be from multiple 1st Gen sources (Amazing Journey is assumed to be a different source), and
since the master seems to have already been lost, we cannot expect any better sound sources in the future.
The wow and flutter that was in the original source has been largely eliminated, and it is clearly clearer and easier to listen to than previous releases!
There are some parts where the sound undulates (especially Magic Bus), but this was the same in the previous version, or the corresponding parts were significantly cut (see track list below).

★The second half of Disc 2 includes a bonus excerpt of Tommy’s part from the first day of Fillmore West on June 17th!
Originally, this recording had been circulating for a long time as the 18th performance, but with the recent appearance of the real 18th performance, it was re-counted as the 17th.
The sound is quite fuzzy, but the phase shift has been corrected and the fuzzy feeling has been largely eliminated by mono-correcting it.
The sound fluctuations and wow-flash that were in the original recording have been corrected so thoroughly that it’s hard to believe they were a bonus!
It’s unlikely that this will ever be released on CD!
