★UPGRADE!!!!
The Who’s “Tommy” is a masterpiece, a performance from the 1969 Woodstock Festival. This updated release includes cuts from the previously released “Complete Woodstock 1969” (already sold out). The sound has also been completely overhauled, resulting in the ultimate Woodstock performance! This is a must-have album! This is not just a reissue, it’s an astonishing update!
Following the release of their landmark album “Tommy,” The Who produced their greatest performance of 1969, Woodstock. It’s still fresh in our memory that the masterpiece “Complete Woodstock 1969,” which captures the entire performance in perfect sound quality, has finally sold out. It’s unthinkable that such a definitive performance, boasting the highest quality multi-track live recording, would be cut off from stable supply. It was such a huge bestseller.
On the other hand, currently available Woodstock live recordings on other labels have been subjected to excessive equalization, such as “Smile EQ,” which has significantly altered and deteriorated the sound of Keith’s drums in particular.
This is the perfect opportunity to apply the latest AI technology, which has proven extremely effective with various live recordings of The Who, to Woodstock. So, rather than simply re-releasing it, we are releasing a literal rebirth of Woodstock this week!
Despite the long-awaited hope, The Who have never been able to release a complete Woodstock album. When they finally did release it in 2019, it was in the form of a pricey box set that included the entire event, and it was not something that could be easily acquired.
The release “Complete Woodstock 1969” was based on the parts included in that box set. Naturally, the sound quality was perfect, but perhaps to ensure consistency with the complete event set, looking back, it felt like a tame, goody-two-shoes mix for a Who live recording. As those who witnessed it unanimously attest, the Who’s live shows at the time were held in an era without fully-fledged PA systems, which made the sound emanating from the stage all the more incredible. As evidenced by this, both Pete and Roger suffered hearing loss, but the 2019 mix undeniably feels toned down the impact of those staggeringly loud concerts.
This time, we’ve once again used the latest AI technology, which was used to great effect on “LIVE AT LEEDS: 55TH ANNIVERSARY ULTIMATE EDITION” and “DEFINITIVE ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL 1970: LONGEST & RESTORED EDITION,” to remix and remaster the sound, recreating the overwhelmingly raw and explosive sound of a Who live performance from 1969. The inspiration for this was the powerful mixes of “Sparks” and “Pinball Wizard” from the soundtrack of the film “THE KID ARE ALRIGHT.” Using the latest AI technology, we first decomposed the sound into 10 tracks: six drum parts (crash, ride, hi-hat, kick, snare, toms), guitar, bass, vocals, and cheers. Each track was then remastered and mixed down.
First and foremost, you’ll be struck by the thick sound of Pete’s Gibson SG. This alone puts this album on another level than the previously released “COMPLETE WOODSTOCK 1969.” Even more than that, Keith’s drumming, as mentioned at the beginning, has the greatest effect! His unparalleled dynamics have been reborn in a tighter, more vivid, and more approaching state than ever before!
The highlight is the extended recording of Abbie Hoffman’s speech before the Who’s appearance, which was cut from “Complete Woodstock 1969,” as well as the announcement after the show. Even the contours of the legendary moment when Pete kicks Hoffman out after he comes back onstage during a live performance are heard with more tension, as expected from the sound making.
Not only has the sound quality been improved, but the reproduction quality as a documentary of the legendary night has also been dramatically improved. The ultimate Woodstock that goes beyond a mere reissue… This is a must-have!
