The Who’s 1989 reunion tour left many fans confused by the fact that Pete Townshend was unable to play electric guitar due to his hearing loss, and that the band had expanded to include the now-familiar supporting musicians.
Under such circumstances, it was a period that was often overlooked in the history of Who, but as the 21st century arrived, the best audience recordings of that time were unearthed one after another, resulting in a re-recognition of “Was it such a good tour?”
First of all, Pete’s decision to switch from electric to acoustic guitar and then to increase the number of musicians bore fruit, making this a groundbreaking tour as it allowed the precise sound creation that was on the Who’s albums to be reproduced on stage for the first time.
In fact, even on albums like “TOMMY,” acoustic guitars were used more than electric guitars, and during the Keith Moon era, they relied on wild sounds because they had to play with a small band of members.
However, during the 1989 tour, the Who were able to recreate the rich sound of the album on stage, something they hadn’t been able to do before, thanks to the latest technology. A prime example of this is “Pinball Wizard.” Many fans were thrilled to hear Pete play the intro on delicate acoustic guitar, just like in the album version.
This groundbreaking tour has resulted in the release of an official live album, a video of the June “TOMMY” reenactment, and even leaked pro shots of some of the shows.
One performance that has been completely overlooked is the live radio broadcast from Dallas’ Cotton Bowl in September. Because it was literally a live broadcast, there are no pre-FM recordings. Furthermore, it has been completely overlooked because only one incomplete CD has been released.
However, the version released this time is based on a version recorded on a Maxell high-position cassette at the time. Even though it was recorded on the same stereo soundboard, its vividness is different from that of the official live album, and even from the radio live performances that were meticulously mixed for broadcast.
What’s more, it’s a live broadcast that really captures the charm of the 1989 stage, which played the dynamic sound of a large band, but with the same precise sound as the album.
And above all, the fact that John Entwistle is not only alive and well but is still in his prime and making a huge impact.
By the way, at the time of release, the pitch was left raised, but for this release it has been properly adjusted to make it easier to listen to. Ideally, I would like to release it on a press CD. There is no doubt that it was a wonderful tour once again!
