Description
Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Phoenix, AZ, USA 7th September 1982 STEREO SBD
In the history of VAN HALEN… well, in the history of rock music as a whole, there has been a rush of excavation of an unprecedented transcendent soundboard, the “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour.” The latest release, two ultra-unique titles that stand out from the rest, will be released at once!
This work is the second part of such a two-part series. It is a superb stereo soundboard recording of the “September 7, 1982 Phoenix Performance.” As mentioned in the commentary for the simultaneously released “CLEVELAND 1982 SOUNDBOARD (Zodiac 801),” this week’s two-part series is unique even in its debut soundboard series. However, their individuality is completely different, and this work is a masterpiece that can be enjoyed with a superb live performance and a slightly unusual sound. And one of the reasons for this individuality lies in the position of the show. To explain this, let’s first take a bird’s-eye view of the band’s activities.

[Dynamic, unique sound exuding an experimental spirit]
This is VAN HALEN from the “DIVER DOWN” era. The first appearance soundboard series so far has been excavated from “North America # 1/3”, but this Phoenix performance was the fifth performance of “North America # 2”.

This show was a hidden night where no audience recordings had ever been found, but it was suddenly possible to enjoy it on a soundboard, and the quality was exceptional. Like the previous soundboard series debuts, it was a direct connection to the mix table, but the mix had changed. This was particularly noticeable in the vocals. Effects were applied to Dave’s main vocals, and the chorus was split between the left and right (Eddie on the right channel, Michael on the left), emphasizing the sense of width.
This is likely related to the fact that they’ve entered the new leg, “North America #2.” All of the tapes in this newly discovered series were recorded on a mixing desk by an engineer named “Roy,” and it seems he experimented with various things on this day. Furthermore, the recording itself is different from previous ones. For reasons unknown, the tape was run with noise reduction applied, resulting in a slightly different nuance from previous works. Moreover, this experiment was limited to this day. The soundboard newly discovered series has grown considerably, but this is a unique album unlike any other live album.
[A super-charged, fully recovered performance]
Such an ambitious sound paints a fiery, passionate performance. The simultaneous release of the sister album “CLEVELAND 1982 SOUNDBOARD” was negatively affected by the final day of the leg, but “North America #2,” which was re-released after a break, is in top form! Perhaps because the time off wasn’t long enough to make them forget the feel of a live performance, their recovery directly translates into momentum, creating an incredibly good groove. Even though the tempo is the same, the beats are completely sharp, and the four members’ breathing is perfectly synchronized. Listening to this album back-to-back with “CLEVELAND 1982” is an eye-opening, powerful performance that will have you soaking up your heart.

The succession of intense soundboards has tended to numb the senses, but this week, two unique series that will invigorate the brain are being released simultaneously. “CLEVELAND 1982 SOUNDBOARD” is an interesting and mysterious work that is out of sorts, so it will divide preferences, but this is a musically cool and dynamic masterpiece. This is a must-listen series that you should definitely keep in mind to get to know the unknown “North America #2”. Please enjoy it to the fullest with the press 2CD that will never lose its brilliance.
