Freedom Hall, Louisville, KY, USA 30th July 1982 STEREO SBD
The completely unreleased soundboard series from the “DIVER DOWN” era that has shocked the whole world. The latest installment has been newly discovered! It will be released on a permanent preservation press CD!
This work is engraved with the “July 30, 1982 Louisville performance.” It is the first stereo soundboard recording of that performance. Recently, the newly pressed masterpieces “BILOXI 1982 SOUNDBOARD (Zodiac 775)” and “FORT WAYNE 1982 SOUNDBOARD (Zodiac 780)” were very well received, and this work is their sequel. If the excavated route is the same, it is a sister work with similar quality and show content. Of course, because it is so close, the position of the show must be carefully confirmed. Let’s take a closer look at the activities at that time.

This is the overall picture of the “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour” accompanying “DIVER DOWN”. The newly excavated soundboard series is roughly divided into “North America # 1” and “North America # 3”, and this work is the former. The aforementioned “BILOXI 1982 SOUNDBOARD” and “FORT WAYNE 1982 SOUNDBOARD” are also records of the same leg, so let’s focus on the dates and check their respective positional relationships.

…And so it goes like this. This Louisville performance was the 11th performance of the tour. It was the concert the day before “FORT WAYNE 1982 SOUNDBOARD”. This show has long been known for audience recording, but of course this work is different. It is the first stereo soundboard recording to appear completely.
The quality is superb and superb. Anyone who has experienced even one of the previous series can imagine this, but unlike official or FM broadcasts, the direct connection to the mix desk allows for unprocessed, unedited live performances to flow out in their raw form. There are hardly any cheers at the height of their popularity, and only the performance sounds and vocals of the four performers occupy the ears. The mix balance is also intensely vivid, with no consideration given to home audio.
And above all, the sense of synchronization is intense. The panning that blows left and right with incredible stereo width creates a sense of scale that makes your brain feel like a venue, and it’s truly another dimension, as if your brain is connected to the instruments and microphones. You’ll be immersed in the pleasure of completely matching your entire body with the original VAN HALEN.
It’s a truly transcendent soundboard, but in fact, this work is one of the most maniacal in the series. It’s the recording time. It seems that only one 60-minute tape was used that day, and about 18 minutes from the start of the performance were not recorded, starting with “Jamie’s Cryin'” which was approaching the middle. And at the end of the tape, “DOA” finished in about 1 minute, and the final part was also missed.
It’s a shame, but this alone is an unexpected hint in terms of documentation. Those who experienced “BILOXI 1982 SOUNDBOARD” were probably surprised by the unusual initial set, but after three performances, this work was already the usual set. There are no records of the two performances in between, and this day was the “first standard set.” This work is also evidence of that sound.
Due to the short recording time, it cannot be considered a masterpiece or a representative work, but that does not mean that such a transcendent soundboard cannot be preserved forever. While I recommend “BILOXI 1982 SOUNDBOARD” and “FORT WAYNE 1982 SOUNDBOARD” as an entry point, this is an absolute must-have for any enthusiast/completer. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★ Stereo soundboard recording of the “July 30, 1982 Louisville performance.” This is a sequel by the same people involved as the new press masterpieces “BILOXI 1982 SOUNDBOARD” and “FORT WAYNE 1982 SOUNDBOARD,” and the sound digitized directly from the original master is once again super thick. Although it is incomplete at about 63 minutes, it will imprint in your mind the earliest live performance when the regular set of the “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour” was completed.
