TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS – SANTA CRUZ 1979 SOUNDBOARD(2CDR)
Civic Auditorium, Santa Cruz, CA, USA 24th July 1979 STEREO SBD
Tom Petty declared bankruptcy in 1979, but also experienced a major breakthrough with “DAMN THE TORPEDOES.” Here comes a soundboard album that will let you experience the live performance of that turning point in your mind.
This work includes a stereo soundboard recording of the “July 24, 1979 Santa Cruz Performance.” While 1979 is generally remembered as the “year of DAMN THE TORPEDOES’ biggest hit,” the meaning of the album changes completely before and after its release. To determine which album this is, let’s first take a look at the band’s activities at the time.

This is Tom Petty in 1978/1979. The life-changing hit “DAMN THE TORPEDOES” came about in the fall of 1979, and this Santa Cruz performance took place about three months earlier. It was the second performance of “North America # 5.”
This work, which conveys such a show, is a superb soundboard that combines vivid master freshness with the warmth of an analog feel. The tone has a vintage feel, but that is the flavor exuded from the instruments and equipment. There are no dubbing marks or aging deterioration, and the beauty of the subtleties is exquisite, with no distortion or twisting, and there is no sense of digital artifacts. The live performance of 1979 flows gently into your brain with a natural feeling that makes you feel like you can even hear the sound of the instruments themselves.
Such a light soundboard depicts a full show that exudes a sense of impending breakthrough. As mentioned above, this work is in the midst of the production of “DAMN THE TORPEDOES”, but it is also in the “YOU’RE GONNA GET IT!” era. Let’s organize the set by comparing it with “WINTERLAND 1978 (Uxbridge 1525)”, a masterpiece of the “YOU’RE GONNA GET IT Tour”.
●American Girl (6 songs)
– Anything That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll / Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It) / The Wild One Forever (★) / American Girl / Breakdown / Strangered in the Night
●Other (4 songs + 2 songs + 6 songs)
– You’re Gonna Get It!: When The Time Comes (★) / I Need to Know / Listen To Her Heart / Too Much Ain’t Enough
– Destruction: Here Comes My Girl (★) / Even The Losers
– Other: Cry To Me (★) / Shout / Dog On The Run (★) / I Fought The Law / Any Way You Want It / Route 66 (★)
*Note: Songs marked with “★” are songs that could not be heard even on the masterpiece “WINTERLAND 1978”.
…And that’s how it goes. While focusing on their first two albums, they also showcased a variety of covers and new songs from “DAMN THE TORPEDOES.” Unfortunately, “When The Time Comes” was cut in, but you can also enjoy plenty of precious songs like “The Wild One Forever” and “Dog On The Run.” And the performance is dazzling. I don’t know what the production situation was like at the time, but I’m sure they were very responsive. The sense of fulfillment that comes from working on a masterpiece can be felt directly on the soundboard, which is full of directness.
After “North America #5,” Tom Petty released “Damn the Torpedoes,” achieving great success. This live album captures the prologue to that triumph with a warm, elegant soundboard. This is a live performance of Tom Petty, a man whose life was about to change. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
★A stereo soundboard recording of the “July 24, 1979 Santa Cruz Performance.” This superb recording combines the vivid freshness of the master with the warmth of an analog feel, gently infusing the 1979 live performance into your brain with a natural feel that makes you feel like you can even hear the instruments themselves.
