Koseinenkin Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan 23rd May 1983 STEREO SBD
★UPGRADE!!!
The 1983 “AT LAST SAYONARA Tour” was John Sykes’ first visit to Japan and Phil Lynott’s last visit to Japan. An upgraded master of the iconic soundboard has been released. It will be released on a permanent preservation press CD!
This work is engraved with the “May 23, 1983: Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall” performance. It is a stereo soundboard recording. At the time, THIN LIZZY announced their disbandment on a farewell tour, traveling the world. Among them, the Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall performance in this work was a particularly important concert. To explain the significance of this, let’s first take a look at the schedule of their activities at the time.

(THIN LIZZY disbands)
This is the journey from John Sykes’ joining to the disbandment. At the time, some people may have felt that the disbandment was “prolonged and postponed,” but that was “Europe #4,” which was actually just four additional shows. The main part of the farewell tour ended in May 1983, with the final performance here in Japan. Let’s focus on the dates further.

[Completely official master upgraded to a different level]
All five performances. The Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall in this work is the final day. In other words, it was originally the final performance of the disbandment tour itself. This show also symbolizes the realization of FM broadcasting. The air check has been widely popular. This work is the same FM broadcast sound board, but it is a different upgrade board from the conventional one. It is not a subtle processing such as mastering, but a highest peak updated board that was directly digitized from the air check master at that time.

The sound is truly “fully official.” This broadcast itself has long been called official, but this time it’s on a different level. Not only is there no dubbing, but it’s an upgrade that makes you wonder, “Is this really the same broadcast?” The stereo effect is particularly striking. While it was stereo before, this time it’s wide and vivid, almost like a completely different thing. This is so different that it’s almost laughable, even from the intro to “Cold Sweat.” While one guitar riff roars, another cuts in with a grease, but the previous masters both leaned to the right. In words, it felt like the two guitarists were in the “right-leaning center” and the “right-side.” However, this time, they start completely on the “right” side and chase from the “left.” Of course, this is just a momentary example; the harmonies of the entire series and all the songs are completely different and super dynamic.
Furthermore, the sound quality itself has been significantly upgraded. Previously, there was a thin feeling that was typical of broadcasts, but this new master has a sound that is completely on par with official masterpieces. Rich and powerful, with vivid details. Moreover, because it is not the vividness created by remastering, even in the powerful parts where everyone attacks, the fresh and natural feeling is not shaken in the slightest. I can’t believe this broadcast was of such high quality… I think those who have listened to the previous version will be shocked.
[Five bonus tracks complete with delicious single takes]
Although it’s such a shocking upgrade master, the broadcast itself is the same, so the length of eight songs and about 43 minutes remains unchanged (well, it still feels the same as the official live album with one LP). Therefore, this work has added even more delicious bonus tracks. They are five different versions of the songs included in “THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.” They are not half-finished demos or live performances, but single versions that have been neatly finished in the studio.

While there’s also “Cold Sweat (7″ Version),” which was previously thought to be the same as the album because it was uncredited, and the shortened “Thunder And Lightning (7″ Edit),” the three versions of “The Sun Goes Down” are diverse and interesting. Each version has a different mix, incorporates Sykes’ acoustic guitar, and boldly processes the vocals, making them completely different from the album. Various unfinished demos were later unearthed, but this album contains the complete five takes of the completed version.
Japanese FM broadcasting is famous for its strict master management, which is unparalleled worldwide, and it is said that it is almost impossible for pre-broadcast masters to leak out. Therefore, the ultimate form of Japanese broadcasting is almost determined by three points: “the recording method at the time, the gene, and the preservation state of the master.” This new master is the definitive version that has updated the highest peak in all three points.
This is a completely official new master and a permanent preservation of rare official single tracks, “The Strongest and Last Live in Japan,” which should have been left as an official work. Please enjoy it anytime and forever with this press CD that will never lose its brilliance.
★Stereo soundboard recording of the “May 23, 1983: Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall” performance. This new master, updated to the highest peak, has been reborn as a “completely official” performance, with a stereo feel and freshness that is almost on a different level. Also included are five bonus single versions of songs from “THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.” This is the definitive official recording, symbolizing John Sykes’ first visit to Japan and Phil Lynott’s final performance in Japan.
