Released on the Yard Stick label, the unofficial CD “Alternative Thunder” collects demos and alternate takes recorded respectively in preparation for and during the sessions for “Thunder and Lightning,” Thin Lizzy’s twelfth and final studio album, released on March 4, 1983 on the Vertigo label and capable of securing the Irish band a strong showing (number 4 in the UK charts). New guitarist John Sykes, replacing Snowy White after 1981’s “Renegade” and co-writing the single “Cold Sweat,” contributed a heavier, more full-bodied sound to the arrangements of songs mostly composed, alone or in collaboration, by leader, bassist, and singer Phil Lynott, often joined by keyboardist Darren Wharton, who co-wrote titles such as “Some Day She Is Going to Hit Back” and the group’s final single, “The Sun Goes Down.”
