Description
Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA, USA 2nd December 1983 ULTIMATE SOUND
With the huge success of “SPEAKING IN TONGUES,” TALKING HEADS embarked on their final tour in 1983. This transcendent recording lets you fully experience that moment.
This work was recorded at the “Seattle Performance on December 2, 1983.” It is a superb audience recording. Speaking of the “SPEAKING IN TONGUES Tour,” the official film/live album “STOP MAKING SENSE” is also available, but of course this work is a separate performance. In order to understand the situation around that, let’s first take a bird’s-eye view of the activities at that time.

{October: Production of “LITTLE CREATURES” begins}
[Shocking! Completely official audience sound!!]
This is TALKING HEADS in 1983/1984. There were no tours after “LITTLE CREATURES,” and they didn’t perform live until their 2002 reunion. This was truly the end of TALKING HEADS as a live band. The official “STOP MAKING SENSE” was produced in four performances of “North America # 4”, but the Seattle performance of this work was just before that. It was the third performance of “North America # 3”.
This work, which conveys such a show, is a superb recording with “ultra” attached. It’s so good that you’ll want to line it up forever with “ultra-ultra-ultra…”. It’s a master recently released by the prestigious excavation company “JEMS”, but frankly, it’s a complete soundboard class… no, completely official class. The mix balance is different from the official “STOP MAKING SENSE” (slightly more mid-high), so it can’t be said that “you won’t notice it even if you mix it”, but in terms of quality, it’s not even half a step inferior. The strength of the core, the direct feeling of zero distance, the fineness of the details, the stunning sense of separation, the vividness of the outline… each of the checkpoints is equivalent to “STOP MAKING SENSE”.
What’s even more shocking is that this is the first in a new series. It was produced by Seattle’s legendary taper, Mark S., a master who has recorded hundreds of shows over the last 40 years since the late ’70s. He’s so renowned that Stan Gutoski, founder of the prestigious “JEMS,” called him the “gold standard.” Legend has it that when a recording colleague spotted him at a venue, he stopped recording, saying, “Mark will be the best anyway.” This release marks the first in a series of “Mark S.’s” master master collections. While this recording itself has been available before, this time the master master has been transferred in a new high-resolution format. There’s no doubt it sounds the best ever.
[A delicious full show with classic tracks not even available on the official expansion]
This fully official sound is a full show that’s similar but not identical to the official “STOP MAKING SENSE” release. Let’s compare it with the official expansion released in 2023.
●Speaking in Tongues (6 songs)
・Slippery People/Burning Down The House/Making Flippy Floppy/Swamp/This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)/Girlfriend Is Better
●Other (16 songs)
・Fear of Music: Heaven/Cities/Life During Wartime/I Zimbra
・Remain in Light: Once in a Lifetime/Houses in Motion(★)/Crosseyed And Painless
・Fireworks: Big Blue Plymouth (Eyes Wide Open)(★)/What A Day That Was/Big Business
・Other: Psycho Killer/The Book I Read(★)/Thank You For Sending Me An Angel/Take Me To The River/Love → Building on Fire(★)/Genius Of Love
*Note: Songs marked with a “★” are songs that could not be heard on the official “STOP MAKING SENSE (2023 expansion)”.
…And so it goes. The 2023 “STOP MAKING SENSE” expansion was groundbreaking, but this work allows you to enjoy four songs that you can’t hear there either. Conversely, the only song that is officially included but not in this work is “Found a Job.” The number of songs is also higher, making it a career summary live album that is more than official.
This is the first release in the archives of Seattle’s legendary taper, Mark S., and the pinnacle of Talking Heads’ unofficial recordings. It’s a treasure trove of classics that surpasses the official “Stop Making Sense” album, and at the same time, it’s a live experience album that pairs with the official release. This is an absolute live album that celebrates the launch of the upcoming New Discovery series. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★Superb audience recording of the “December 2, 1983 Seattle performance.” This is the first release of the legendary Seattle taper “Mark S.” archive released by the prestigious “JEMS,” and it’s a completely official sound. Experience the show just before the official “STOP MAKING SENSE” with the same quality, and it’s an absolute live album that allows you to enjoy a delicious full show with classic songs such as “Houses In Motion” that you won’t be able to hear even on the 2023 expansion.
