This collection features recordings by Steve Cropper, the legendary guitarist who shaped the Memphis soul sound and passed away in December 2025. He was the exclusive guitarist for Stax Records in Memphis, a symbol of American rhythm & blues in the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1962 his band, Booker T. & the MG’s, had a hit with “Green Onions.” This bluesy instrumental number has been used in various films and served as a bridge between British and American rock. He was a key part of the sound of R&B legends like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, and Sam & Dave, and he also composed classics like “Dock of the Bay,” “In the Midnight Hour,” and “Knock on Wood.” His guitar style was far removed from long guitar solos, instead focusing on how to bring out the best in the song. His mellow phrasing on his Fender Telecaster wowed connoisseurs and earned him the respect of many professional musicians. No one will ever forget his groovy guitar cutting on “Soul Man.” This album covers his heyday as a Telecaster master, from his first recording with The Mar-Que’s (1961) through Otis Redding’s death.
