Curtis Hixon Hall, Tampa, FL, USA 3rd October 1974
With the impact of “LOTUS” still fresh in their minds, SANTANA crisscrossed North America in 1974. This new soundboard album captures the energy of the final leg of that tour, and is now available alongside the simultaneously released “LAS VEGAS 1974 SOUNDBOARD (Uxbridge 2762).”
This work is the second part of that two-part series. It is a stereo soundboard recording of the “October 3, 1974 Tampa performance.” While the simultaneously released “LAS VEGAS 1974” formed a trio of sisters with “FRESNO 1974 SOUNDBOARD (Uxbridge 2671)” and “SAN BERNARDINO 1974 SOUNDBOARD (Uxbridge 2739),” this work has a slightly different flavor. It is a stage from the climax of the tour, about a month and a half ahead of the sister group. First, let’s take a bird’s-eye view of the activities at that time and confirm its position. ● January 14,
1974 : Ithaca performance (May “LOTUS” / July “GREATEST HITS” release) ・ July 13 – October 28: North America (62 performances) ←★here★ (October “BORBOLETTA” release) ・ November 16: Honolulu performance ・ November 23 – December 14: Japan (16 performances) This is SANTANA in 1974. They came to Japan for the second time at the end of the year, but until just before that, a massive North American tour totaling 62 performances was taking place. Both of these two consecutive works are records created during this “North American” leg. Let’s focus further on the dates and see their position in relation to each soundboard work. ■ Details of “North America”・July 13th + 17th (2 performances) *July 22nd “EDMONTON 1974 SOUNDBOARD” ・July 24th – September 14th (20 performances) *September 15th “FRESNO 1974 SOUNDBOARD” ・September 17th: Phoenix performance *September 18th “LAS VEGAS 1974 SOUNDBOARD” *September 20th “SAN BERNARDINO 1974 SOUNDBOARD” ・September 21st – October 2nd (8 performances) *October 3rd: Tampa performance ←★This work★ ・October 4th – 28th (23 performances) [Newly excavated soundboard packed with maturity precisely because it is the end of the tour] As you can see, the three sisters soundboards are concentrated in mid-September, while the Tampa performance of this work is about two weeks away from there, in early October. This is the final stage of the tour, the 54th performance out of the 62 performances, and it is a stage where the band has refined their performance over and over again.
