★UPGRADE!!!
The soundboard album capturing the Stones’ hilarious first day of 1981 sold out as soon as it was released as “PHILADELPHIA 1981 1ST SHOW” ten years ago. Five years later, it was reissued as “PHILADELPHIA 1981 DAY 1,” but it’s now gone. It’s a popular sound source, combining the appealing elements of a “high-quality PA-out soundboard” and a “crazy first day performance.”
However, the T&J files that served as the basis for the 2015 release were themselves released more than ten years ago, and there was a mistake in that the first version was released as a lossy file, which meant that “PHILADELPHIA 1981 1ST SHOW” was also based on that.
Even so, the album underwent significant reworking at the time of its 2015 release, making it much easier to listen to, but now this is a major improvement. This means that it could be released as more than just a reissue.
Graf Zeppelin was the one who took on the task of re-releasing this album. The original lossy files were not the basis, but the corrected lossless files. Graf remastered the album thoroughly, resulting in a reissue of a quality far exceeding that of ten years ago.
The original file had a drawback in that it was rough to fill in, but GRAF ZEPPELIN redid it from scratch, resulting in a much smoother transition from Aud to SBD in the opening track “Under My Thumb.” Furthermore, GRAF ZEPPELIN carefully re-edited the original to resolve issues such as the uneven sound when “All Down The Line” switched to Aud, and the distortion of the SBD on the VGP “ROCK’N ROLL ANIMALS.”
And the cut after the end of “Beast Of Burden” on the 2015 version had the Aud cheers overlapping, while on the VGP version, the moment it switched from SBD to Aud was missing for about two seconds, and both had rough transitions. This time, they followed the editing style of the 2015 version, yet achieved a perfect transition.
It’s noticeable when comparing “Beast Of Burden” and the 2015 version, but not only was the hiss noticeable, but it also had a certain amount of shakiness because it was based on the Rossy version. In fact, the hiss was so harsh around “Time Is On My Side” that people were suspicious at the time, wondering, “Is this really a Rogéne?” On the other hand, while the hiss was suppressed on the VGP, there was a sense of clunkiness.
In that respect, the careful remastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” and the synergistic effect of the lossless version have brought the hiss noise down to a natural level, and the clarity has been outstanding. Therefore, you can enjoy the PA sound board without the feeling of being stuffy like VGP.
Even so, the chaotic atmosphere of this day remains intense. The band’s early performance of “Shattered” seems to have been memorized, and they played with a certain amount of energy. However, from “Let’s Spend the Night Together” onwards, the performance was a succession of sloppy performances. It seemed as though the arrangements for songs like “Black Limousine” hadn’t even been finalized. Even “Let It Bleed,” which would later become a staple of their ’81 repertoire, started loosely and had to be redone.
In any case, the new songs were in a state of disrepair, and even “Start Me Up,” which was essentially the live debut, was unrefined, and it was nostalgic to think that there was a time when it was so unrefined. Then, when “Miss You” came along, it was a complete change and became incandescent, and there was a huge difference between the songs they were familiar with and the ones they weren’t.
The highlight is “Satisfaction,” in which Keith delivers his legendary miracle intro. Considering 1981, this signature song was the first tour to be regularly resurrected, but as expected, the performance was messy due to the blank. The famous soundboard capturing the rough and loose first day of the legendary 1981 has been reborn by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”!
REMASTERED BY GRAF ZEPPELIN
This is the definitive recording of the first day of the 1981 tour, with all tracks completely recorded, with the missing parts mainly covered by Audio.
The previous version used lossy sound sources, but this time it’s all newly mastered from a lossless master!
Furthermore, phase correction, band balance correction, and low-frequency noise removal have been accurately performed.
★Three songs are essentially missing from the main SB sound source, which has been filled in with Aud as with the previous releases, but the transition is extremely smooth.
The transition between songs after the Beast Of Burden performance on the previous release had a dub recording of Aud at the switching point, and there was a gap of about 2 seconds on the previously released VGP version, but this time there are no omissions and the transition is perfect!
