Description
Pavillon de Paris, Paris, France 4th June 1976Â
★UPGRADE
Last week, the famous recordings from the beginning of the 1976 European tour were released as “Absolutely Too Stoned to Roll: Frankfurt 1976 2nd Night”, but this week, the climax of the 1976 tour, Paris, will be released for the first time in a long time. The Paris performances, which took place consecutively from June 4th to 7th, were not only the core performances of the official “LOVE YOU LIVE”, but also the high quality recordings on each day.
Among these, the 4th has been completely overlooked in recent years. Thanks to the existence of an audience recording with a close sound image and very easy to listen to, items have been released starting with the nostalgic DWP record “ALLRIGHT CHARLIE WATTS”. However, more than 10 years ago, the 1st gen. master of this sound source appeared, and the Sweet Records record “PAVILLON DE PARIS DAY 1” released in 2012 was based on it. In the same year, “FROM PARIS TO TORONTO” was also released by DAC, but the attention was focused on the bonus Elmo Cambo sound quality improved version, and the impact of the main Paris seemed to be diluted.
In addition, in both releases, a cut occurred between “Happy” and “Tumbling Dice” when the cassette surface was divided when the 1st gen. copy was made. The Sweet Records version filled in the gap with a branch copy, but the impression that the sound quality and the editing were rough was undeniable. On the other hand, the DAC version gave up on the filling in and completely missed Mick’s MC before the start of “Tumbling Dice”. In the first place, since the release in 2012, the title of the first day of 76 Paris has not been updated for 10 years, which is a serious situation.
”GRAF ZEPPELIN” stepped up to make a difference in this situation. First of all, the cut between “Happy” and “Tumbling Dice”, which had become a barrier in the original sound source, was carefully supplemented with a branch copy. For the first time, it was possible to listen to it completely without the sense of incongruity that was present in past releases. After all, it was a scene unique to live performances where Mick incited the audience and then “Tumbling Dice” began, so it would be a huge mistake to not record this part properly.
More than that, the sound quality is where “GRAF ZEPPELIN” really shines. The Sweet Records version had a thin sound, and the DAC version had some parts where the high notes were piercing to the ears. So for this release, the 1st gen. copy was thoroughly brushed up. They managed to make a recording that made the most of the thickness and depth of the original low-gen sound without falling into a thin or unnatural sound. Compared to the 2012 releases, the difference is clear.
Originally, the sound image was very close as an audience recording from 1976, and the natural stereo feeling was also a wonderful sound source, but for the first time, the unique state of the 1st gen. copy was sealed on CD by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”.
The performance from that day was not adopted for “LOVE YOU LIVE”, but instead “Angie” was recorded for the TV broadcast. Above all, the performance with the momentum that is characteristic of Paris 76 shines throughout the entire work. The sound quality is so good that you can tell at a glance how great the performance was that day. It is enough to foresee that the great performances that will form the core of “LOVE YOU LIVE” will be mass-produced from the next day. In fact, the high tension from “If You Can’t Rock Me / Get Off Of My Cloud” and the lively performance of repertoire such as “Hey Negrita” and “Hot Stuff”, which symbolize the 1976 tour, are truly unique to Paris 76.
As I mentioned at the beginning, after each release in 2012, the supply of June 4 items was cut off, and GRAF ZEPPELIN revived the first day, which had been overlooked during the series of Paris performances that were not to be missed all day, with a truly impressive skill.
It’s so beautifully put together that you won’t even notice the cuts between the songs, and it’s also a great listen, making it a worthy new definitive version of 76 Paris!
REMASTERED BY GRAF ZEPPELIN
★Newly remastered from the same 1st Gen tape as the previous version
★In addition to phase correction, the low range that felt a bit lacking in the previous version has been corrected to create a thicker sound.
★The beginning of Happy ~ Tumbling Dice has been reconnected with a sub-tape to restore it to its original condition.
In the previous version, there were not enough connections, there was a small noise when returning to the main tape at Dice, and the timing of the connections was off, making the performance stutter, but with this version, there are no such problems and you can enjoy all the songs in full non-stop recording.
