Description
Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY, USA 22nd June 1975 PERFECT SOUND (UPGRADE)
The Rolling Stones 1975 US Tour The first day at Madison Square Garden, where Eric Clapton made a legendary appearance on the legendary day, is also a popular sound source that is waiting to be reissued.
There were two monaural audience recordings on this day, and the one that is considered to have the best sound is “source 2.” Therefore, several items have been released, but it was later discovered that this recording was Joe Maloney’s recording, and the 2019 release “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1975 1ST NIGHT: JOE MALONEY MASTER” was based on a version transferred from his master.
The 2022 second edition of “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1975 1ST NIGHT: JOE MALONEY MASTER” was a huge hit, featuring Clapton’s performance onstage. Graf Zeppelin then completely reworked the sound source to create an even more captivating version. Despite these two releases, both have long since sold out due to overwhelming popularity. This week, we’re re-releasing the first night at the LA Forum and the first night at MSG.
However, since the thorough remastering by GRAF ZEPPELIN has become the definitive version of this recording, this is a straight reissue of the 2022 second edition. In essence, it could be called the third edition.
The transfer by Maloney Master’s Krw_co, which appeared in 2019, was so excellent, but enthusiasts also praised the work of “GRAF ZEPPELIN,” which made it even more pleasant to listen to. As expected, because it is a mono recording, it does not reach the shocking sound image of the mirrored recording, but this also picks up almost no surrounding noise, making it easy to listen to for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
The original recording before the Krw_co transfer was easy to listen to, but it also had a dark, flat impression. The Krw_co version eliminated that quirk, and the meticulous adjustments that are unique to “GRAF ZEPPELIN” and the thorough filling in of cuts using “source 1” resulted in a perfect compilation of the content, which was the secret to its popularity. This meant that there was no need to make any further changes for this re-release.
Coincidentally, the first day of the LA Forum from the same 1975 tour will also be reissued this week, but it’s interesting because even the same tour has a completely different atmosphere. I wonder if the quality of the stuff available on the East Coast and West Coast is different (laughs). Even with the same high-tension performance, the atmosphere is clearly different in New York and LA.
What’s more, both MSG and LA have a special encore, “Sympathy For The Devil,” but the arrangement is completely different. This day is the best example, but MSG assumes a guitarist will join in, and Keith plays the bass just like in the studio recording of the song.
As a result, the performance became somewhat shaky, and perhaps having learned his lesson, Keith returned to guitar in LA, performing with a much tighter arrangement than in MSG, as evidenced by the release of “LA FORUM 1975 1ST NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES: COMPLETE EDITION.”
However, even on days when no guitarists joined MSG, the album continued to be performed with Keith’s bass arrangement, resulting in a rare, unusual live arrangement. And yet, Clapton appeared on the first day of MSG. This was the first time he performed Keith’s bass arrangement, which added to the chaotic atmosphere of the performance, and around the 5-minute mark, he unleashed his killer slowhand phrases, which are simply amazing, no matter how many times you listen to them.
While the re-release of “HOLD ON TIGHT,” the masterpiece recording of the final day of MSG with Santana, by “GRAF ZEPPELIN,” is still fresh in our minds, this week we are finally releasing the long-awaited first day of MSG with Clapton. Don’t miss it this time!
