JAPANESE RELEASE – 2 CD
Description
Live at The Forum, Inglewood, California, USA 27th March 1970 TRULY AMAZING/PERFECT SOUND
★UPGRADE!!!
The LA Forum is a legendary arena, literally a sacred ground for ZEP, and their first live performance there took place during their spring 1970 tour. Many photos remain of the day, and Plant’s majestic figure was even used on the cover of a Japanese single. Meanwhile, audience recordings saw the light of day on Mad Dogs’ “D’YA FEEL ALRIGHT?”
This is Source 1, but the reality is that it didn’t attract much attention, probably because it was a vintage audience recording, even though the sound image was close. After that, Source 2, which had better sound quality, appeared. This one has clear and easy-to-listen-to sound quality, but the punchline is that three songs have not been recorded.
So, in the 21st century, best compilations combining two different sound sources, such as the EV album “EVERYBODY FEEL ALRIGHT?”, and the now-nostalgic TCOLZ album “FIRST TIME AT THE FORUM,” which coupled both sources, were released. However, these items all had problems with Source 1, such as a large sound bias due to phase shift or incomplete pitch correction.
So, this time, the main Source 2 is the most natural sound ever achieved by using a master that does not go through the internet. I think it is a truly clear and easy-to-listen-to recording. The missing three songs are combined with Source 1, but this also uses a natural master that does not go through the internet, and the phase shift mentioned above has been thoroughly corrected and compensated for. It certainly has a more vintage feel compared to Source 2, but the combination of this restoration and naturalness makes it much easier to listen to.
On the contrary, not only the missing performances but also cuts etc. are fully recorded by making heavy use of Source 1. For example, cuts at the beginning of “How Many More Times” are also compensated for by Source 1, but at first listen, it doesn’t feel strange at all, and it seems like the taper is a little messed up.
Furthermore, the tape twist in the latter half of “Bring It On Home,” another drawback of Source 1, was thoroughly corrected and adjusted to a completely stress-free state. This part alone stands out as being incomparable to past releases.
This is ZEP’s first LA Forum, where the two sound sources are meticulously combined and reproduced, creating a fresh atmosphere. Without knowing that the first historic performance would be produced when they visited the venue again five months later, the performances they performed hard at in the LA arena they visited for the first time are captured in clear sound quality. You’ll be surprised at how easy the sound quality is to listen to.
”Heartbreaker,” whose arrangement has not yet been solidified, will try out various intro productions on this tour, but it is interesting that it started honestly on this day. The performance of “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” which has been continuously played from Europe before its release, and “Whole Lotta Love,” in which Johnsy plays the organ, are also very fresh.
And the scene after the show, captured on Source 1, is vivid as a documentary. The announcement, “Jimi Hendrix will be performing here next month,” elicited a huge cheer. That live performance was the highly acclaimed “LA FORUM 1970.” Even at the LA Forum, where ZEPHIP would later perform a renowned performance that would prove their dominance, this was the first time they performed such a wise performance… This is an incredibly valuable record. This limited press CD release captures this historic night in its absolute best condition. The legend began here!
