Description

As you know, the Rolling Stones’ early albums were a mix of recordings from various studios, which led to the mixing of stereo and mono tracks on a single album in the CD era. In fact, prior to “Aftermath,” there were no albums with all tracks in stereo. To make matters even more complicated, tracks recorded in stereo at Chess Studios in Chicago when the band moved to the United States in 1964 were released in mono at the time of the original release, only to be upgraded to stereo in later compilations and CD releases.
In addition, it was commonplace until the mid-60s for singles to be made only in mono, and as for the Stones, there are even songs for which there are no stereo mixes, up until “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?” However, stereo versions of singles such as this one and “The Last Time” have been unearthed in the underground scene, and even non-enthusiasts would have wished for a compilation of existing stereo mixes of the early Stones, both official and unofficial.
This convenient compilation was made possible by Prof. Stoned, a remixer enthusiast who has recently become a hot topic. It makes sense that he would compile Stones-related recordings, given his name, but he has also displayed his impressive editing skills, putting together the stereo sound sources.
First of all, up until “Down The Road Apiece,” the officially released stereo mixes have been compiled and no changes have been made to the sound quality. However, it is typical of him that he has properly adjusted the subtle issues with the stereo mixes of “Around The Around” and “Confessin’ The Blues.”
When these songs were first released in stereo in 2002, the first note was somehow out of sync. This was especially noticeable in the intro to “Around the Around,” but Prof. Stoned used state-of-the-art technology to precisely correct the distortion. This kind of attention to detail is truly what makes him so special.
Furthermore, from “Tell Me Baby, How Many Times” onwards, he has compiled underground stereo versions, including unreleased tracks, which, since the quality of these has been comparable to the official versions, have been released over the past decade, and he has included them here without any alterations.
Among these, the stereo mixes of “The Last Time” and “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?”, mentioned earlier, were exceptional in showing Prof. Stoned’s skill. These stereo mixes, which remain officially unreleased, were unearthed in the nostalgic Scorpio “DARTFORD RENEGADES” and caused quite a stir, but the sound quality itself was not up to the official level. An upgraded version was recently unearthed in “REEL TIME TRIP,” but it still had some roughness compared to the current remastered CDs.
Prof. Stoned has used the latest technology to bring it to a level comparable to other sound sources, which is nothing short of amazing. The result is truly worthy of being called the culmination of a stereo mix, and there is no sense of incongruity when listening to the whole thing.
And as for the stereo mix of “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love,” which is still only available on the official compilation LP “Rock ‘N’ Rolling Stones,” it’s in no way inferior to the current remastered CD, so there’s nothing to complain about. This is a highly anticipated and convenient album for enthusiasts, a culmination of early Stones stereo recordings that never seemed possible. Prof. Stoned has done it again!
★The original release was in December 2021. This hit title sold out all 500 copies in a short period of time. The long-awaited second pressing is now in stock.
