Description
Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA, USA 8th June 1972 (2nd Show)
The Stones’ 1972 US tour was a further development of the arena tour formula they had perfected on their 1969 tour. However, it wasn’t a complete arena tour, and the opening included a small gig that seemed to serve as a warm-up for the large-scale arena tour.
The best example of this would be the gig at the Hollywood Palladium, long known from TMOQ’s LP (the master tape was published in the book “A PIG’S TALE” – we’re looking forward to its release), but before that they also did a gig at Winterland in San Francisco. When it first opened in the ’60s it was called the Winterland Ballroom, but once the psychedelic era was over and the term “ballroom” became obsolete in the context of rock concerts, it came to be shortened to just “Winterland,” and in fact it was written that way on the poster for this gig.
The gig at the 5,400-seat concert hall was a unique event during the 1972 tour, which was a full arena, and of course it was extremely difficult to get tickets. Nevertheless, four gigs were held at Winterland, and it was fortunate that a complete monaural audience recording of the second show on June 8th, which was the last stage, was left behind.
The precious sound source that captured this gig is “MIDNIGHT MAGIC” on the VGP label. Although the sound image was recorded in a distant state, enthusiasts were delighted to discover a 1972 gig before the Hollywood Palladium, and it was a fact that the sound quality was at a level that made them grateful that the sound source was still there. However, in 2016, a low-generation version of this recording suddenly appeared.
What became clear was that “MIDNIGHT MAGIC” was in a state of considerable gene drop, and the previous state of “I’m grateful that the sound source is still there” was even worse. “WINTERLAND 1972 2ND NIGHT” was a hit among maniacs, even though it was a maniac audience, as the rough feeling peculiar to gene drop was wiped out. It is also a masterpiece that has been sold out for a long time now.
So for the long-awaited re-release, GRAF ZEPPELIN took a completely new approach to restoring the sound source. In particular, they eliminated the overlapping parts from the cut in the middle of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” which was the biggest stain in 2016. They also carefully adjusted the bass, which was a dilemma in recording the audience at a gig with a sense of distance in the sound image, and made the sound even more visible, evolving the precious gig into a state where it can be “listened to” even more than before.
But the biggest achievement of GRAF ZEPPELIN was that they completely corrected the distorted tape twist that occurred in “Love In Vain” and “Jumping Jack Flash”! Since the original audience was a vintage audience, enthusiasts would have shrugged off such problems as unavoidable. In particular, in the former, the noise-like sound that occurred twice while Mick Taylor was playing a superb solo was very harsh.
GRAF ZEPPELIN worked on a thorough restoration of the record, and it was reborn as if there had never been any trouble. Now you can listen to Taylor’s superb solo on “Love In Vain” with peace of mind. The difference is so big!
This recording is not only a precious record of a gig from the early 1972 tour, but also captures the final live performance of “Loving Cup,” which was dropped from the setlist after that. It seems that the Stones were initially very keen to play this song, and it was performed in an electric arrangement from the first day of the tour in Vancouver.
Furthermore, from the next Seattle performance, Keith switched to an acoustic guitar and aimed to perform in an atmosphere closer to the studio version, and a live arrangement was also decided for a new song in which Keith would play an acoustic guitar along with “Sweet Virginia.” However, it was probably judged that this song was difficult for the Stones to play in a large arena at the time, and it disappeared from the repertoire at the end of that day.
Also, when “Street Fighting Man” started, it seems that something happened on stage, and Charlie stopped playing the drums many times, but when you listen to it again, it sounds like he had some trouble with his snare and occasionally hits the cymbals to keep the place going. Therefore, the thrilling scene where the performance progresses mainly with Keith’s rhythm guitar is unique to the early part of the tour. Above all, the previous upper feeling was quite good, but this time, the early gig of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dynamite Tour has been further upgraded by the thorough restoration of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”!
