. In 1965, the Stones’ popularity in the US soared with consecutive hits of “Satisfaction” and “I’ve Been There Forever.”
In October, they embarked on their fourth North American tour, where they were met with enthusiastic responses everywhere. Riding that momentum, they recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood in December.
The recording went smoothly, and a total of 10 songs were completed, including “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “Mother’s Little Helper.”
Manager Andrew immediately moved to release it as an album.
The title was “COULD YOU WALK ON THE WATER?”.
The jacket photo was taken and preparations were underway, but the record company stopped the release, claiming that the title “Can You Walk on Water?” was blasphemous to Christ.
In the summer of 1966, the Beatles’ “more pop than Christ” comment sparked outrage and a boycott, but they narrowly avoided a major crisis.
Ultimately, in March 1966, they added newly recorded tracks like “Under My Thumb” and “Lady Jane,” and released the album under the new title “Aftermath.”
This release is a compilation of all the tracks from that cancelled, legendary album, “COULD YOU WALK ON THE WATER?”, along with related songs from the same period. It includes detailed Japanese liner notes detailing the circumstances, anecdotes, and track listings.
