Knebworth, Hertfordshire, England 21st August 1976 SBD/AUD

★49th Anniversary Complete Edition
★Mainly using the sound board of the LP, the missing parts are filled in with video audio, and the parts that still can’t be filled in are filled in with the order of multiple audiences such as LP, realizing a pseudo-complete live album! Almost pseudo-non-stop recording!
Everyone loves the Rolling Stones’ 1976 Knebworth. However, when the crucial leaked multi-track part was released on CD, the sound quality deteriorated. As a result, even though it was a stereo soundboard from a popular live performance, it was a sound source with the dilemma that it could not surpass the quality of the LP.
So, “HOT AUGUST NIGHT” was released twice over the New Year holidays and was a huge success, realizing a meticulous reproduction of the original LP reissue by “GRAF ZEPPELIN.” Not only did it convert the LP into a clean CD, but it also completely eliminated the pitch instability that was the biggest drawback of this soundboard, making it a groundbreaking release.
Now that the best CD of the SBD part has finally been realized, the next thing that is naturally required is a complete version of Knebworth. Although it is a popular sound source, it is true that the SBD part is far from a complete live recording. Also, the editing of the previously released Knebworth complete titles was poor, and above all, the SBD part was so deteriorated that there was a desire for a new edited item.
The groundbreaking VGP “HOT AUGUST NIGHT” album, released at the time, was the longest SBD recording ever made by utilizing the mono audio from video footage that had just been unearthed at the time from the Midnight Beat Knebworth album for the parts not included on multi-track recordings. Naturally, Audio was used for the missing parts. While making heavy use of the Shaved Disc, which was appreciated by enthusiasts as the first Audio release of Knebworth in an era dominated by SBDs, the album was supplemented with Audio from the old LP “STONES TOUR MOP UP!” for tracks after “Stray Cat Blues,” a hurdle for SBDs, and “Brown Sugar” at the end of the live performance.
When VGP was released in 1997, software wasn’t available that allowed for precise editing like it is today, and while it was a groundbreaking release, it’s also true that there were many areas that weren’t fully explored. Using VGP as a base, SODD further edited the gaps between songs, resulting in “HOT AUGUST NIGHT.” While innovative approaches like re-adding the MC before “Stray Cat Blues” with video audio and filling in the harsh beeps in “You Gotta Move,” which were likely caused by a mobile phone malfunction, with Audio were used, the sense of incongruity felt when switching from SBD to loud Audio clapping remained. And, most importantly, the increased volume and equalization had the negative effect of making the sound quality of the SBD parts even rougher.
In preparation for this release, I listened to those two previous titles again, and the sound quality of the SBD parts was quite rough. The hissing noise that sounded like a “hiss” on the LP had evolved into a “breathing” noise, which could be heard at the same level as the performance on “Little Red Rooster” and “Fool To Cry.” This is why a new complete release based on the clearer LP was so eagerly awaited.
So, once again, GRAF ZEPPELIN has begun work on a new, truly complete Knebworth edition. They’ve thoroughly reworked the audio to complement the SBD parts that were perfected in the previous release, even going back to past LP releases. While the two previous titles were based on the concept of using sound sources from the CD era, this time the audio has returned to the LP source, capturing the entire live performance in a clearer state than ever before.
This time too, “Stray Cat Blues” was covered by “STONES TOUR MOP UP!”, but from “Happy” onwards in the second half of the concert, the cover featured a cross-dressing illustration (Knebworth LPs don’t have very good covers, do they? lol), and the familiar “STONED STONES” LP was used. This item was also praised in the nostalgic Takarajima Stones bootleg book as “the easiest to listen to on Knebworth Audio,” and above all, the close vocals of Mick and Keith are easy to hear. It’s a shame that it couldn’t be used for “Stray Cat Blues” because distortion was likely to occur in the early part of the concert due to its closeness, but this makes the second half of the concert easier to hear than on previous releases.
Compared to this LP, the source of the Shaved Disc has a sense of distance in the sound, and this time it is limited to filling in the cuts between songs. Furthermore, the annoying beeps in “You Gotta Move,” which was a chronic problem with SBD, have been smoothly compensated for this time, making it much easier to hear than past items.
The highlight is the skip of “Hey Negrita,” which had been skipped in previous items, just after three minutes. This was a bit of a disappointment in previous items, but by filling in the gaps from “STONES TOUR MOP UP!”, this was completely recorded. GRAF ZEPPELIN has thoroughly created a perfect finish for this new complete version. This is the complete Knebworth that fans all over the world have been waiting for!

★Mainly using the sound board of the LP, the missing parts are filled in with video audio, and the parts that still can’t be filled in are filled in with the order of multiple audiences such as LP, realizing a pseudo-complete live album! Almost pseudo-non-stop recording!

The three vinyl versions are
: Look At My Face (LP)
, Stones Tour Mop Up (2LP)
, and Stoned Stones (AC side of the 2LP).

The VGP discs currently being considered the best are mainly SBs made on tape, not transcribed from LPs.
However, the sound is quite rough, and there are many gaps between songs due to the lack of filling, so I think there is a significant difference this time.
The SODD disc, based on a VGP-146 copy, also still has gaps, and the overall sound is very poor, with a seaweed waveform.
The highly acclaimed Shaved CD seems to have noise reduction applied and also feels cramped, so this time it is only being used for a small amount of filling.

(Note) The audio from VGP146 onwards, from Brown onwards towards the end, is from a Mop Up LP source, not Shaved.
