Definitive collection of BBC recording sessions and live performances

The Rolling Stones’ BBC radio appearances produced many items as Brian’s star sound source. Especially after the rebroadcast in the 1980s, masterpieces such as “STONES AT THE BEEP” on LP, “GET SATISFACTION IF YOU WANT IT!” on CD by TSP, “BBC SESSIONS 1963-1965” on Gold Plate, and “BEAT BEAT BEAT AT THE BEEP” on DAC were released, but when the official “ON AIR” was released in 2017, it all died down.
However, this was due to the impact of the Stones BBC finally being officially released, and it was clear that even at the time the finish was unsatisfactory. First of all, the performances that were only available as air check recordings were not included. This was still unavoidable as a measure for general listeners, but even more than that, the song order was far from chronological. Furthermore, the finish that was given the demixing process that was just beginning to emerge at the time is now a bit subtle.
Ironically, the so-called Demix technology has improved dramatically since the release of “ON AIR,” and using it for the Stones’ BBC seems like a disappointing decision now. And the most fatal thing was the error in “The Last Time.” The fact that this is still being ignored is an unofficial response.
However, the sound of the Stones’ 1965 appearance on “ON AIR” was produced with a certain degree of sound spread and power, and it doesn’t sound bad even when listening to it now. However, the demixing applied to the early BBC appearances such as “Memphis Tennessee” and “Roll Over Beethoven” now sounds like a splashy sound. It is true that the overall finish was far from natural to begin with.
Despite this, the fact that it was officially released meant that the renewal of the comprehensive items ceased with the DAC version as the last BBC item.
It’s been a long time since the last “Prof. Stoned” has come to help me in this situation. His restoration of the sound sources has come to an end, but recently he has started to organize the BBC live sound sources of each artist. In the midst of this, he has put together a compilation of the Rolling Stones BBC. It is a magnificent collection that can be called the culmination of a new era.
In the first place, the volume is a huge difference from past items. The content across three discs is surprising, stretching all the way back to the Mick Taylor era. As mentioned earlier, the air check sound sources from that time that could not be officially released have been brushed up again, and the sound quality has generally improved from past items, so it is impressive.
Also, “Don’t Lie To Me” from Disc 1, Saturday Club, and “Route 66” from Disc 2, Saturday Club, were covered up by Prof. Stoned, who didn’t want to cut the intro in addition to the poor sound quality, by copying and pasting another part of the song. However, the live version of “Route 66” was arranged to start with Keith’s guitar, unlike the studio version which started with Charlie’s drums, so this editing is quite pleasing. All of this is possible because Prof. Stoned went back and re-recorded all of his performances from the original recordings.
The results of re-recording the performances for which the original broadcast recordings still exist are particularly remarkable. In particular, the sound quality of the recordings on Yeh Yeh, the only BBC appearance in which the band’s signature song “Satisfaction” was performed, was so clear that even in the interviews outside of the song, it was clear to see that “the sound has improved…”. It’s very clear and natural.
Also, regarding “Top Gear”, not only was “The Last Time”, which was a big blunder by the official, recorded in a clean state (this is obvious), but it was also a surprise that the ending tambourine sound, which had been cut from all items until now because the narration was overlapping, was also recorded completely. The clear differences in sound quality and content are evident even in familiar takes like this, which is unique to “Prof. Stoned”.
What’s more, the groundbreaking thing about this release is that it covers all the performances from 1967 onwards, when they stopped recording live shows. For example, the Stones provided the audio from the promo film for “Jumping Jack Flash” to be played. Moreover, instead of the “yeah yeah” version, it was the take where Mick says “pappaaah” during the interlude. As for “Prof. Stoned,” he states, “This is not strictly a BBC recording, but was included to ensure completeness.” Moreover, Brian’s interview at this time, and even the audio of Mick Taylor being interviewed on an appearance after Brian’s departure, are enough to amaze enthusiasts.
It’s also typical of Prof. Stoned to have sorted out the audio from the TV appearance on Top of the Pops, which was also on the same BBC, and even the episode where Mick sang live vocals. Even in the 1971 appearance, where only Brown Sugar exists as a video, the remaining songs are recorded in the best sound quality ever. Although it is still an air check sound source from TV, it is still at a level that cannot be compared to past items. Even more groundbreaking is the surprising unearthing of the audio of Ruby Tuesday, which had never been recorded until now from the 1967 appearance on Top of the Pops. Here, too, Mick sang live. However,
the biggest surprise this time was the dramatically improved sound quality of Around And Around, which was recorded on Disc-2 from Top Gear. Although it was only one song, I was surprised at the excellent sound quality that radio enthusiasts at the time received the broadcast on FM and recorded it on a plug. I felt that it showed the difference in quality from the air check with so-called AM radio sound quality.
And recently unearthed recordings such as “Not Fade Away” from the Joe Loss Show and “Hi-Heeled Sneakers,” the beginning of which was previously missing, are also included in their entirety. The finishing touch is that it brings together poor quality recordings and fragmentary recordings such as the Hyde Park report (I was also surprised at how good the sound of “No Expectations,” which is played in fragments here), making this an undisputed new compilation of the Stones’ BBC, which has not been seen in a long time. Please listen carefully to the end!
