Description
Live at Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, CA, USA 23rd July 1978 TRULY AMAZING/PERFECT SOUND
★UPGRADE!!! The definitive recording of the first night at Anaheim in ’78!
This is a literally overlooked recording from the end of the Stones’ 1978 tour, specifically the first night at Anaheim Stadium. This live performance was previously only heard on the nostalgic 1990s release “THE BURNING OUT,” but the audience recording included on that album had numerous problems, including a generally low and inconsistent pitch, many cuts between songs, and a left-leaning sound.
However, for an audience recording of a stadium concert in America in the 1970s, it surprisingly didn’t pick up much of the surrounding noise. Rather, the soft, balanced sense of presence and the comfortable distance from the performance made it a very listenable recording.
The masterpiece that directly addressed the problems of the first day at Anaheim was the acclaimed album “ANAHEIM 1978 DAY 1,” released in 2020. With the release of this album, it was the first time that the pitch was accurate and stable, the soundstage was also settled, and the cuts between songs were not noticeable, resulting in a painstakingly put together work that made the first day at Anaheim finally enjoyable to listen to. Moreover, since it was released more than five years ago, it had long since sold out.
This masterpiece should have been re-released much earlier, but for this long-awaited re-release, GRAF ZEPPELIN has completely re-evaluated the sound source, transforming it into a new version that goes beyond a simple reissue. The mastering, which maximizes GRAF ZEPPELIN’s signature naturalness, further enhances the already soft recording quality and listening experience.
The intro to “Love In Vain” is the perfect way to check the difference in listening experience compared to the previous version. The original recording had some hiss noise, but in the previous version, attempts were made to suppress it, resulting in the hiss noise fluctuating in quiet sections like the intro of this song. However, this time, there is no equalization that tries to forcibly suppress the hiss, so the hiss noise is present at a much more natural level. You can clearly hear the difference in listening experience from the previous version just from this point alone.
Furthermore, the crossfade processing, which was not fully implemented in the previous album to minimize the noticeable frequent cuts between tracks, has been completely redone.
“GRAF ZEPPELIN” is known for its meticulous finishing touches that ensure an incredibly smooth listening experience throughout. This process has resulted in an even more natural and clear stadium audience recording than the previous one.
The first day in Anaheim was truly representative of the 1978 tour, and the film very realistically captures the Stones’ laid-back performance in a sun-drenched afternoon stadium show. The messy ending to “Lies” is a typical 1978 moment, and Mick and the others don’t try to be overly enthusiastic just because it’s the end of the tour; instead, they maintain the looseness that is characteristic of the 70s Stones.
The ultimate example of the Stones’ laid-back style comes in the latter half of the show. After Keith’s “Happy” (which is also played in a very rough manner), there seems to be some kind of sound problem, and an awkward pause ensues without the next song starting. In the end, Mick and Ronnie loosely interact to fill the time, and “Sweet Little Sixteen” finally begins in the loosest way of the entire tour. It’s laughable compared to the official Fort Worth performance, for example.
The following track, “Brown Sugar,” is played with an incredibly loose feel, truly showcasing the wild and laid-back Stones of the ’78 tour. Beyond its unique listening experience, this superb recording captures numerous moments that define the ’78 tour, including Mick’s legendary “throw your shoes!” call during “Far Away Eyes,” and is made even more accessible by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”!
