ROBERT GORDON & LINK WRAY – RUMBLE: THEIR 1ST EUROPEAN TOUR 1978 (2 CD + DVD)

As Bob Dylan declared in 1978, “nobody plays real rock and roll anymore except Robert Gordon and Link Wray.” That same year, they embarked on their first two European tours, the first of which is documented by Made In Germany in a box set containing previously unreleased material, reproduced on two CDs and a DVD. The first audio disc and the video disc contain a recording of the show staged on January 24, 1978, at the studios of German broadcaster Radio Bremen for the television program “Musikladen Extra”; the other compact disc contains a concert from three days earlier (January 21) at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Bassist Jon Paris (longtime member of Johnny Winter and then John Hiatt) and drummer Anton Fig (Spider, Ace Frehley’s Comet, Warren Zevon, Joe Cocker) accompany the two headliners, perfectly in tune with each other in a repertoire that includes great classics by Billy “The Kid” Emerson, Frankie Ford, Eddie Cochran, Ray Charles and above all Elvis Presley, as well as the western song “Rawhide” and the most successful hits by both: obviously, the famous instrumental “Rumble” by Wray (with that song, in 1958, he established himself as a true pioneer of the electric guitar as well as the use of tremolo and distortion) and “Fire”, written by Bruce Springsteen but which became one of Gordon’s signature tunes. It was that tour that finally made Wray known in Europe and instigated a rock and roll revival around the world that gave rise to groups like the Stray Cats.
