The Checkerdome, St. Louis, MO, USA 11th May 1978 STEREO SBD
REO SPEEDWAGON’s 1978 album “YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO, BUT YOU CAN’T TUNA FISH,” featuring Bruce Hall, went double platinum, ushering in the golden age of the band. Now, this FM soundboard album will bring that live performance right to your brain.
This work was recorded at the “May 11, 1978 St. Louis Performance.” It is a stereo soundboard recording. FM broadcasts on this day have long been known as a classic, but this work is a little different. It is a new master digitized directly from the master reel newly excavated by the prestigious “Krw_co.”
Before we get to that interesting sound, let’s first take a look at the show’s position. Let’s take a look at the overview of the activities at that time.

{Spring “Nine Lives” production}
[FM soundboard from a prestigiously unearthed master reel]
This is an overview of their activities during the “Tuna Fish” era. They also toured after the release of “Nine Lives” in 1979, but that’s omitted here. After releasing “Tuna Fish” in the spring of 1978, they embarked on a furious tour. This St. Louis performance is the 22nd show of the biggest leg, “North America #2.” This show marks the time when the band was gaining momentum on stage as the album was climbing the charts.
As mentioned above, the FM broadcast of this day has long been a popular staple. Copies derived from air check cassettes have been circulating for many years, but this work is on a different level from that lineage. It has been digitized directly from the master reel by the prestigious excavation company “Krw_co,” and is fresher than any version that has been released so far.
The sound is a masterpiece reminiscent of the good old days of FM broadcasting. Unlike the vividness of a sound directly connected to a mixing desk, this is a “radio sound” mixed specifically for broadcast, and its flavor emerges more vividly than ever before. Dubbing marks and tape deterioration that are unavoidable when copying via air checks have been eliminated, allowing you to hear the original broadcast quality as it was. The brilliance of Kevin Cronin’s vocals, the sharpness of Gary Richrath’s guitar, and the breadth of Neil Doughty’s keyboards all emerge with even greater clarity.
