Paramount Studios, Los Angeles, CA, USA 1 February 1980 STEREO SBD

★UPGRADE!!!
The original “THE WALL Tour,” a rock opera performance that will remain in rock history. The rehearsal soundboard has been upgraded! A 2-CD press featuring the highest quality sound from “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is now available!
This work was recorded at Paramount Studios on February 1, 1980. It is a stereo soundboard recording capturing the tour rehearsal six days before the opening day. This record was a legendary recording that was also highly popular in relation to the original “THE WALL Tour.”
In the first place, it is valuable just to be able to listen to the live version of “THE WALL” on a stereo soundboard, and the appearance of Roger Waters, who serves as stage director, is also super realistic. When it first appeared about 30 years ago, there were many cuts and it fit on one CD, but since then, upgrades have been made one after another. In our shop, the complete tape “LA REHEARSALS COMPLETE 1980” has been loved as a classic.
This is the same complete sound board, but it’s the 45th anniversary edition that updates the highest
quality. First of all, the source is different from the conventional one. The foundation of this work is the latest transfer version, which was just released in 2025. It was released by the world-famous collector “Neonknights,” and it is a master whose unprecedented freshness is a hot topic.
GRAF ZEPPELIN then meticulously remastered the recording. As anyone who’s read this article knows, GRAF ZEPPELIN’s mastering boasts obsessive precision, yet the most distinctive feature is the lack of processing. This may seem contradictory, but the essence of the work lies in the goal. The goal is to “reproduce and recreate the sound from the live performance,” and every effort is made to achieve this. Even deviations in pitch and phase, even down to 1/1000 of a second, are tolerated, and balance is corrected after frequency analysis. Various types of noise are also carefully controlled to the limit that does not distort the performance sound. In other words, mastering is like the restoration of a painting or work of art.
That same precision is also utilized in this work. Perhaps the most significant aspect this time around was the noise processing. Those who have experienced previous masters will be familiar with the original sound plagued by hiss, and previous releases often applied strong noise reduction to mask that noise, resulting in a swooshing, distorted performance. However, this time it’s super natural. Not only was the 45th anniversary “Neonknights” transfer excellent, but the precision of the “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering was also top-notch. Low-frequency hum noise has been thoroughly removed, restoring the beauty of the on-site sound, even down to the feel of the instruments.
A historic soundboard that can be enjoyed musically and behind the scenes.
The rehearsal, brought back to life with such a sound, is truly moving. Even though it’s the complete version, it’s still a complete tape. Since some songs weren’t performed during the rehearsal, the story of THE WALL isn’t played in its entirety, but instead, the highlight is the atmosphere of the production as it creates the stage of the century. Even though it’s a rehearsal, the level of completion varies depending on the stage, but this work is a crucial moment, six days before the premiere. While the songs and arrangements are already ingrained in the performers, the detailed stage direction and the sense of harmony with the props and stage equipment haven’t been fully realized. In other words, once the performance begins, each song is carefully crafted to the point where it can be appreciated as a musical piece, but in between, you can also experience the behind-the-scenes feel of Roger directing the staff.
For example, after “One of My Turns,” Roger halts the full rehearsal because things aren’t going as planned. He explodes in frustration and gives harsh instructions. “Hey You” is also interesting. During the performance, there is equipment trouble, and all the instruments go down at once. Roger’s live voice reverberates as he sings the bridge part, “But it was only fantasy,” and then the performance stops and he mutters, “What on earth is going on?”
Anyone with stage experience will understand this, but once the show is complete, you start to worry about the details, and the dwindling time gets more and more frustrating. The mood unique to rehearsals at the end of the show overflows from the speakers. What’s more, this production aims to be the rock opera of the century, “THE WALL Tour.” Even the pain of its birth is a historical drama.
The historic masterpiece “THE WALL” has shown various expressions, including official albums, movies, live albums, re-releases, and demos. This work is the “tour rehearsal” version. Musically, it is a live album where you can enjoy live performances of “THE WALL” numbers, and it is also a documentary album that gives a glimpse behind the scenes of a historic performance. This 45th anniversary edition marks the pinnacle of this rare soundboard. Please enjoy it anytime, anywhere with this press CD that will pass on its brilliance to future generations.
