[New master who achieved “surpassing the 1st generation”]
This is PINK FLOYD in 1971. Speaking of October 1971, the filming of the movie “LIVE AT POMPE II” took place, and the following week the “MEDDLE Tour” started early. The San Diego performance of this work was the concert that was the first three performances of the tour.
This show is famous for its historic recordings. Due to its wonderful sound, it has become a staple of the “MEDDLE Tour” since the LP era. This work is the latest version that updates its highest peak.
Its true identity was recently revealed by the famous collector “Neonknights” as the 3rd Gen master. At this point, avid collectors may be wondering, “Wait a minute, wait a minute. The best is the 1st Gen, right?” In fact, according to “Gordon S.”, who recorded it, the original reel has already been lost, and the 1st one he owns has been considered the best.
However, the depth of vintage recording lies in the fact that generation isn’t everything. Sound quality varies depending on various factors, including the state of tape storage, the equipment used during dubbing, and the accuracy of the transfer process. While the overall trend is undoubtedly that “younger generations = better sound,” this is merely a guideline and a guideline. There are no absolute rules for the results of each master; the only way to confirm this is to listen to the actual sound. And in the case of the “October 17, 1971 San Diego performance,” “the third-generation tape is best.” Of course, this isn’t just something we say, but the consensus of the collector community, as clearly stated on the specialist website “Reavong Drooling.”
In fact, the sound is rich and dense. While the previous 1st Gen was also extremely high-end, this new master offers even more information and a dramatically improved three-dimensional feel. Its power is evident from the opening line, “Eugene, Beware the Axe.” In the intro, various instruments intertwine with the icy keyboard, but the previous master mixed synths and other instruments, creating a single, plank-like ensemble. However, this work features only synth sounds, with other instruments dancing above and below. Because they sound simultaneously, they overlap, but they don’t blend together, creating a multilayered soundscape. Of course, this is just one example; the freshness of the new master can be felt throughout the entire album. I’ve been repeating the phrase “Gene isn’t everything,” but this upgraded sound speaks volumes.
[A renowned performance that was one of the best on the MEDDLE Tour]
Such a rich, dynamic sound depicts a stage overflowing with ingenuity and imagination just as the new tour began. This show is known as one of the best performances on the “MEDDLE Tour,” and its merits and flavors can be felt more vividly than before.
For example, in “Eugene,” the keyboards ebb and flow in the first half and then overflow with a flowing quality, and in the following “Fat and Wobbling Sun,” the surprisingly rare distant ringing of bells is clearly audible, and the keyboard phrases reminiscent of the BBC are also exquisite.
The highlight of the second half is “Simbaline.” In addition to the footsteps in the interlude, there are also women’s laughter and the roar of the crowd, each of which flows into your brain with unprecedented three-dimensionality and detail, creating a “1971 sound world” in your cranium.
The latest transfer from the 3rd generation has surpassed the 1st generation. This 2CD press will preserve its beauty forever. Who would have thought that a masterpiece recorded in the 70s and known since the 80s would bring new excitement to 2025? This new masterpiece not only brings the sound world of 1971 PINK FLOYD into your own room, but also inspires awe at the depths of rock archive culture. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★A superb audience recording of the “October 17, 1971 San Diego Performance.” Recently, the renowned collector “Neonknights” released the third-generation master, whose sound completely surpasses the first-generation, which was previously considered the best. Furthermore, the amount of information has increased, and the three-dimensional effect has been dramatically improved, creating a layered soundscape unique to FLOYD. This is a cultural heritage album that allows you to experience one of the best performances from the “MEDDLE Tour” with unprecedented beautiful sound.

REMASTERED BY GRAF ZEPPELIN

★Latest 2025 transfer!

This is the definitive version of the San Diego performance, known since the LP era as a TOASTED disc!
The previous release in 2015 was a 1st Gen sound source, but this time it’s a 3rd Gen.
However, even on Floyd specialty sites, this 3rd Gen sound source is considered the best sound quality, and when you actually listen to it, it’s only the latest transfer, and the sound feels thicker, denser, and more detailed.
In the past, lower-level sound sources have sounded better than higher-level ones, such as at the 1970 Rotterdam performance, and this time it can be said that the same pattern applies.
In addition, the phase shift that was noticeable early on in the previous version, leaning to the right, has generally been improved, making this the definitive version of this performance!
