[The iconic recording from the end of the IN THE FLESH Tour has been upgraded]
…and so on. Eight live albums were born from the 14 performances, but the highlight was the four consecutive shows at the large New York venue, Madison Square Garden. The second night in particular is known for producing an iconic recording, and along with the Boston show, it has reigned as a symbol of the final stages of the “IN THE FLESH Tour.”
The main source for this work is a legendary recording from the past. It is a super clear and direct recording, often mentioned alongside “ULTIMATE BOSTON 1977” and “ULTIMATE OAKLAND,” and “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has polished the best existing master of that recording. In fact, the sound is truly the best ever. “GRAF ZEPPELIN”‘s methodology is, so to speak, supreme on the original sound. Rather than blindly boosting the sound pressure or masking it with sheer force, they strive to repair the damage to the master that has been etched by time. Each type of noise is carefully treated, the balance is adjusted based on frequency analysis, and pitch/phase correction is performed without allowing even a 1/1000th of a second of error. They maximize the potential of the recording itself and recreate “the sound that was heard at the time.” In other words, it is a process similar to the restoration of paintings and cultural artifacts, and this work is a testament to that philosophy.
[A full live album that breaks the previous record by four minutes]
However, this recording already boasts superb sound quality. While it has been meticulously polished, it’s not like it has been “reborn as something completely different.” In this case, the upgrade in “length” might be more noticeable.
While the main focus of this release is undoubtedly the famous stereo recording, there is actually another mono recording of the same show. Although some parts of previous releases were secretly used to fill in gaps, this release re-checks the entire show down to the second to ensure there are no missing parts. We have attempted to extend the recording as much as possible. In fact, after a thorough review, we found that there were surprisingly many parts that could be filled in, and as a result, we have set a new record for the longest recording by about four minutes compared to previous releases.
As expected, the performance parts were filled in even on previous masters, so this time the filling mainly covers the gaps between songs. What’s particularly significant is that the second part of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” on DISC 2 is recorded from before the performance, and the encore section is also recorded at a considerable length. The sound check section after “Money” is also included, further enhancing the completeness of the live experience.
You might think, “Oh, it’s just a gap between songs,” but don’t underestimate it. After all, this recording was made at the very end of the historic “IN THE FLESH Tour.” As has often been said, the atmosphere, with firecrackers exploding everywhere, was filled with a palpable tension, and Roger’s frustration grew as the show progressed. The mood of the venue, which would later lead into “THE WALL,” is historically significant, even if only in terms of the intensity between songs. This is
a long-loved traditional recording of the second night at MSG. Alongside “ULTIMATE BOSTON 1977” and “ULTIMATE OAKLAND,” it has reigned as the pinnacle of the “IN THE FLESH Tour,” and this is the latest version of that classic. This new masterpiece combines the highest level of mastering achieved through the meticulous mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” with the longest recording ever achieved through the addition of extra sources. Enjoy this ultimate sound anytime, anywhere with this pressed 2CD set that preserves it permanently.
