[Legendary studio sessions from the NEVERMIND era]
This is NIRVANA in 1991. This album was recorded two months after the album’s release, right in the middle of “Europe #2.” The session was organized by Lotje Isermans, a renowned DJ at the Dutch public broadcaster VPRO. Isermans had heard “NEVERMIND” from a friend of his who was his tour manager before its release, and thought, “This is going to be a big hit!” and asked the band to hold a session. (Incidentally, a VPRO session also took place in November 1989, making this the second such session.) In fact, VPRO’s rival station, VARA, also stepped up to collaborate, and the album was broadcast on their respective radio shows, “Nozems-A-Gogo” and “Twee Meter De Lucht In.”
This recording has long been known for its superb quality, especially for radio broadcasts, and has become a standard as a valuable studio recording of the time. Our shop has also included the (previous) best master in “RADIO FRIENDLY (Zodiac 214),” making it widely popular. This time, we have the pre-FM master. Moreover, it’s a super upgraded version that’s expanded beyond comparison!
[Newly excavated soundboard master, expanded more than twice the previous size]
In fact, the biggest point of this work is its length. The previous master was completely official, so even though this new master is superb, it is expected, but the recording time is unexpected. In the first place, only “Here She Comes Now (cover of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND)” and “Where Did You Sleep Last Night (cover of Leadbelly)” were broadcast. After that, in 2002, VPRO released an expanded version online, but it was just under 21 minutes. In contrast, this new excavation master is over 43 minutes long.
The contents seamlessly reveal the entirety of the precious studio sessions. From Daniel Johnston’s cover of “I Stand Horrified” to unreleased jams with undetermined song titles (“Born in Virginia” and “That first song over gain” are working titles, or rather, nicknames), the recordings are one after another. Furthermore, the incomplete “Old Age,” the failed take of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” that stalls midway, and even tuning in between are all poured into your brain with the superb soundboard.
The station reportedly requested “Polly” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” but Kurt Cobain declared, “We’re going to play the songs we want to play.” The result was a plethora of incredibly rare performances you won’t find anywhere else. This is a shocking soundboard album that lets you replay these priceless, legendary studio sessions in your mind in the length of a single LP. This is truly a cultural heritage album. Please enjoy it to the fullest on this press CD, which will never lose its luster.

★A stereo soundboard recording of the “November 25, 1991: VPRO Studio Sessions.” This newly unearthed master boasts more than twice the length of the previous master, and the sound is completely official.
