The 1992 Reading Night is a legend in rock history, symbolizing the very existence of NIRVANA. Experience the full story with this incredible soundboard album, which surpasses the official release! It will be released on a permanent preservation press 2CD!
This album, of course, features the “August 30, 1992 Reading Festival” performance. It is a stereo soundboard recording. This stage is NIRVANA’s most famous and legendary concert, and official video works and excerpt CDs are standard…or rather, it is widely known as the most basic of basics. This work is a full live album of this most important stage, and is a new era’s highest peak update that far exceeds official works.
So what is the true nature of this work? How did it achieve such an incredible feat as surpassing the official version? To explain these things, let’s start by looking at the materials that bring the legendary stages to the modern day.
[Official version that drew ire from collectors around the world]
Since the audience recording is irrelevant this time, we will omit it. There are three main types of line / soundboard sound sources from the 1992 Reading Festival.
●A:
This was produced by the BBC for FM broadcasting and mixed by Miti Adhikari. This is the version of “Tourette’s” that was included on the official live compilation “FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH.” However, it is an incomplete version.
●B: Leaked Pro Shot Version
The soundboard audio of the complete pro shot master leaked 20 years ago. This was before the official CD / DVD was released, and the mixer was Andy Rose.
●C: Official product version
This is the most famous version from the official CD/DVD “LIVE AT READING.” It was released in 2009 and was mixed by Nathaniel Kunkel (Russ Kunkel’s son).
With the release of the official “C” version in 2009, everything was supposed to be settled… but that wasn’t the case. In fact, the official mix has a very bad reputation among collectors around the world. It’s not just “not great” or “disappointing,” it’s also angered collectors to the point of being dangerous, with comments like “Nathaniel is a bastard with zero talent” and “We just need to kill him.”
Certainly, the anger is understandable. First of all, the official “C” release contains cuts and is not a complete recording. What’s even more critical is that the official “C” mix is incredibly flat, lacking width and dynamism. The drums are particularly bad, merely a light, thumping sound with no real impact or force. Of course, if you’re only familiar with the “C” sound, you might think, “That’s how it is,” but many enthusiasts, having already experienced Reading with “A,” are left thinking, “They’ve ruined that wonderful sound!” In fact, “A” was truly amazing. If you have the official “LIVE AT READING” and “FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH” copies, I recommend listening to “Tourette’s” and comparing them. I think you can empathize with the enthusiasts’ anger.
However, “A” also had an unavoidable drawback. It was far from a full show. The original broadcast slot was 60 minutes, so there was no longer version.
[A dream full live album created with the latest AI technology]
Despite being the most legendary stage performance in history, there is no definitive version… This frustrating history will come to an end. This work was produced for that purpose. It is a complete live album remixed using the latest AI technology based on “B.”
If you’ve read this article, you may already know that the AI we use isn’t something we create from scratch. It’s a demixing technique that breaks down audio sources into multiple tracks and an editing technique that recreates the sense of balance of official releases. The sound you hear is 100% a live performance by NIRVANA.
To briefly describe the contents of this work, “Material = B” and “Goal = Complete version of A.” First, the soundboard audio of “B” was demixed into 10 tracks (ride cymbal, hi-hat, crash cymbal, kick, snare, tom, bass, vocals, guitar, and cheers). Each track was mastered separately and reassembled (remixed) in three dimensions.
And the key to this “track-by-track mastering” and “remixing” is that it’s not self-serving. The blueprint is the long-loved “A,” and every element, including the tone of each instrument, its positioning/arrangement, depth, etc., is reproduced in accordance with “A.” The AI’s power is particularly great in the amount of reverb. “B” originally had a strong reverb, but the reverb components are removed by demixing. Then, the AI, trained on “A,” reapplies reverb to the raw dry sound.
[NIRVANA’s masterpiece transcends all expectations]
The resulting Reading Night is truly a masterpiece that transcends the official sound. The “sound” of the BBC broadcast that made Reading legendary permeates the full show, instantly dissipating the anger stirred up every time you play the official CD/DVD. Not only does the performance itself sound completely different from the official version, but the powerful sound has been expanded to 98 minutes and 40 seconds, further building up the heat and chaos. This album was created in pursuit of the dream of how amazing the complete version of that sound would be, but the listening experience of this full live album surpasses even that dream.
It’s not uncommon to find that “it was even better than I expected when I tried it,” but I never imagined it would end up being such a great live album. This highest peak update far surpassed the original goal… No, this is NIRVANA’s greatest masterpiece, surpassing both official and unofficial records. Enjoy this impactful 2CD anytime, anywhere.
