Pre-Madonna: Early Years 1979-1981 is an anthology collection of rare, unreleased recordings from before Madonna’s major label debut, which saw her rise to superstardom in the 1980s. The compilation chronologically traces Madonna’s career from her early years as an unknown artist to her major label debut in 1983.

CD 1 features seven tracks, including the “Stephen Bray Demo” that led to her major label contract in 1981, the original versions of “Everybody” and “Burning Up” that appeared on her debut album, and “Ain’t No Big Deal,” a potential debut single. This collection also includes four demos from her time with her first manager, Camille Barbone, as well as studio recordings from the same period. This is a valuable archive of her transition from rock to dance-pop. CD 2 features recordings from Emmy and the Emmys, a short-lived band in 1980, and The Breakfast Club, which she first joined as drummer in 1979, as well as recordings from her band days before her solo career. Formed by Madonna herself as the leader and guitarist, Emmy and the Emmys featured a raw, new wave/punk-oriented style influenced by Blondie and the Pretenders, and the young Madonna’s striking vocals and performances are a must-listen. After moving to New York and joining The Breakfast Club, his first band, he initially played as drummer, but he also composed original compositions and sang lead vocals on demo recordings, providing a glimpse into his talent. This carefully curated collection of rare recordings showcases his talent. Previously available in fragments, these recordings have been newly discovered and enhanced in quality, and include unedited extended recordings and previously unreleased tracks. This latest compilation, a definitive collector’s edition, compiles Madonna’s early years, from her early days to her major label debut.
