Live at Curtis Hixon Hall, Tampa, Florida, USA 9th April 1970 TRULY AMAZING/PERFECT SOUND
★UPGRADE!!!

This week, we will be releasing a recording from ZEP’s first appearance at the LA Forum, along with a renowned recording from their spring 1970 US tour. Originally, this tour was a time when recordings other than the first day’s Vancouver “Pb” were rare and shrouded in mystery. Rather, with the advent of the CD era, many performances have been unearthed, and in the analog era, the only recording other than “Pb” that conveys the state of this tour is the April Tampa recording.

Moreover, the audience recording was so easy to listen to that it even spawned a Japanese acetate, but many enthusiasts must have come across this recording on the LP “MAKUNDJU,” which was wrapped in a completely different era’s Jimmy (1983) jacket. In fact, the recording was so clear that it didn’t even bother me that the beginning of the live performance was not recorded at all, and the recording only started from the end of “Bring It On Home.”

Because the sound quality is so easy to listen to, many versions of this album continued to be produced even after the CD era began, including a Cobra version that simply shrunk the LP artwork. However, “TAMPA 1970” has since reigned supreme as the best, and there have even been calls for its re-release.

However, in recent years, “Dogs of Doom,” who have been dedicated to exploring ZEP sound sources, made a major discovery in 2021 by unearthing another source. This is because it recorded the early part of the live performance that was not heard in items below “MAKUNDJU.” Although the sound quality is not as clear as the “MAKUNDJU” source, it was a powerful and easy-to-listen-to audience recording.

On the other hand, there was a twist in the tape that occurred in “What Is And What Should Never Be.” This became noticeable and made it difficult to hear. Despite this, when this sound source first appeared, items were released that were connected to the “MAKUNDJU” source without adjusting this part due to its popularity. Also, at the time, there was a reality that the compilation album combined with the new source was postponed because “TAMPA 1970” was not yet sold out.

Therefore, it is natural to compile this as the longest version making full use of the two sources for this release. Before that, the early part of “What Is And What Should Never Be”, which was able to be fully recorded, was edited after thoroughly eliminating the distortion of the new source. This alone makes it much easier to listen to than other items. In addition, the “MAKUNDJU” source also adjusted the distortion in the organ intro of “Thank You”, making it even easier to listen to.

In “Thank You,” a rare scene is captured in which Jimmy serves as a backing chorus, which can only be enjoyed because of the good sound quality. Since it was sung without backing chorus at the LA Forum, this was a valuable scene that seemed to be a short-lived attempt introduced in April.

What’s more, the emergence of the new source has made it possible to hear this day from the opening. After all, speaking of the spring 1970 tour, you want to hear from “We’re Gonna Groove,” which marks the beginning of the live performance. Moreover, the performance of the same song on this day, revealed by the new source, is also amazing. The literal explosive opening is a masterpiece.

The Tampa 70 recording, which was missed early on due to its excellent sound quality, has been transformed into a full-length version that can be fully enjoyed from the powerful opening. The performance of “How Many More Times,” which was even more heated due to the lack of chaos at the venue compared to the LA Forum, is also incredible. The spring 1970 recording, which had been eagerly awaited for its reappearance, has been reborn as the best version!

(Remaster Memo)
★The source of Dogs of Doom released in 2021 (with a recording time of just under 60 minutes) is used as a sub-source, and the first half and previously missing parts are included!
Although it is not a complete recording, the first 28 minutes or so have been compensated for, and “What Is And What Should Never Be” has been recorded in the completed version!

★ The pitch that was sloppy with the new source has been thoroughly adjusted! Naturally, the compensation for the early part of “What Is And What Should Never Be” has also been corrected for pitch slop.
