[Main: 16mm film of MSG performance filmed for broadcast]
First up is the color film of the “February 7th MSG performance,” the main focus of this work. Previously, all excavated footage was 8mm film, but this is 16mm. It’s a genuine professional shot filmed by major television broadcaster NBC, and its visual beauty is on a different level from home video-quality 8mm. However, even though it’s a professional shot, it’s not the so-called multi-camera concert professional shot. It was only for the news program “NBC Newsreel,” and is a documentary-style video taken with a single camera. It’s not the program itself, and the time counter is a vivid 16mm in the editing stage.
However, its contents are a treasure. Although incomplete, you can witness “Rock and Roll (approximately 3 minutes 20 seconds),” “Sick Again (approximately 2 minutes 30 seconds),” and “Over the Hills and Far Away (approximately 1 minute 10 seconds)” from the camera pit (with superb audio!). Not only Paige and Plant, who are lined up right in front of you, but also Bonzo’s close-up is neatly captured.
The film is also packed with other great scenes, including interviews with the audience, much like a newscast, capturing the reality of 50 years ago. A group of bearded rock dudes gathers, and a woman shows off her large breasts and stretched-out tour T-shirt. There’s also an audio recording of an interview with Peter Grant. Grant was 40 years old at the time, but he looks just like the man in “The Godfather” and “Mean Streets.” The interviewer must have been intimidated.
Bonus: 8mm footage of the Montreal performance by Jim Kelly.
This groundbreaking, newly discovered 16mm film is approximately 21 minutes long. But that alone is undeniably not enough. Therefore, this work also compiles a masterpiece 8mm film recorded at a recent show.
The first bonus footage is a color 8mm film from the Montreal concert on February 6th, the day before the main MSG show. This footage was unearthed in the video collection of a professional cameraman named Jim Kelly. In addition to taking photographs, he also shot video on Super 8, and many of the valuable 8mm footage were found among his belongings after his death.
What’s more, this footage is different from regular 8mm, clocking in at a whopping 51 minutes. 8mm offers higher image quality than later VHS, but its biggest drawback is its short shooting time. At most, only a few dozen seconds could be shot at a time, and even if fragmented footage was scraped together, it usually only lasted about 10 minutes. This film is essentially the same, meaning a full show isn’t possible, but the number of fragmented footage is unprecedented, resulting in a lengthy work of 50 minutes.
Moreover, each cut is long. Of course, since it doesn’t exceed the limits of 8mm, there are occasional warps within a song, but it’s still remarkably easy to watch. Previous 8mm films would jump to the next song while you were wondering “What song was that again?” over a short phrase, but this film is different. In the first place, warping within a song means that filming was restarted multiple times, and it’s footage that could only have been shot by Jim, a professional cameraman. It’s at a level where you can really enjoy each song.
Bonus: 8mm of the Landbar Show with Sky Suite Experience!
Bonus #2 is a color 8mm from the “February 10: Landbar Show,” three days after the MSG performance. This film’s unique feature is its panoramic view of the stage. While the slightly purple hue is reminiscent of the previous film, the scene is completely different. While the previous version was shot from the arena seats directly below the stage, this one is shot from a bird’s-eye view. According to the excavator, it was filmed from “Capital Center Sky Suite #1,” which, in more conventional terms, is shot from the second-floor seats to the right of the stage, looking down. And because it’s a panoramic view, you can see everything you want to see onstage, from Plant idling during a guitar solo to the stage set with its shining logo and the lighting system illuminating the stage from the wings.
1975 was the year when LED ZEPPELIN was still a powerful band. This exquisite color video collection will transport you to February 51 years ago over the course of approximately 94 minutes into your own home. The main 16mm footage celebrates the realistic visual beauty that only a television studio could offer, while the precious 8mm footage offers a historic spectacle and a front-row seat experience. Each of these three videos is equally impressive. Please take this opportunity to enjoy them to the fullest.
