Description
Live at Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, California, USA 2nd June 1973 ULTIMATE SOUND / SBD
The live performance that followed “BONZO’S BIRTHDAY PARTY: BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER CASSETTES,” a classic performance from the first leg of ZEP’s 1973 US tour, was another outstanding performance at Kezer Stadium on June 2nd. While there are many refreshing and heart-warming performances at the end of the last Bonzo’s Birthday and the first leg of this week’s Kezer, this Kezer performance, with Bonzo at the center, gives the impression of a literally refreshing performance heard from start to finish.
The reason why such a great performance has become known to enthusiasts is due solely to the existence of high-quality stereo audience recordings. The first LP, “Persistence,” was released in a distinctively American style. Countless CD releases have followed, beginning with “The Vibes Are Real,” released by Scorpio under the name Continental Sounds, in a vermilion jacket.
The Continental Sounds version was released in 1992, so its release in the early days of CDs also demonstrates the quality of this Aud’s sound quality. Since then, the sound quality has been further improved with nostalgic items such as “WHO’S NEXT” and “TAKKA TAKKA.” With the arrival of the 21st century, even soundboards have been unearthed, making for a truly fortunate situation.
The 2018 release of “KEZAR STADIUM 1973” is a masterpiece that can be said to be the culmination of Kezar Stadium, which has solidified its position as a famous sound source produced in the United States in 1973. Although it has been sold out for a long time, the careful compilation of the best versions from the masters by Aud and SBD has been highly praised among enthusiasts, and it is still a popular item as the definitive Kezar edition.
Looking back, the 2018 version wasn’t perfect, and the biggest problem was that the Aud’s positioning was shifted to the left due to phase shift, which was left uncorrected. And Kezer’s items consistently had a high pitch. If we used Jimmy as the standard when adjusting it, we wouldn’t be able to fully correct the pitch because his guitar tuning was unstable that day. So this time, we reworked it using Jonesy’s keyboards, like “Misty Mountain Hop,” as the standard.
In addition, the missing parts of the SBD, “Whole Lotta Love” and the missing MC parts of the two songs at the end of the live performance, have been filled in with AUD, and the result is extremely smooth and feels natural at first listen. This SBD, which only contains the final part of the live performance and was left as part of the “Bonzo Board,” is said to have been recorded by Bonzo to check his own playing, but it can now be heard in a more complete form than ever before.
Since June 1st, the day after Bon’s birthday, was a Friday off, Jimmy and Robert likely had a night of fun. They were two hours late arriving for Kezar’s Saturday afternoon performance. This likely explains Jimmy’s poor tuning, which was evident from the intro to “Stairway To Heaven.” Fortunately, his playing really took off around “Over The Hills And Far Away,” and from then on, he delivered a series of lively phrases typical of the first leg.
Apart from Jimmy, everyone was in top form from the opening, and Bonzo’s lively playing in particular was what determined the performance of the day. The fact that he firmly captured his bass drum was also a great thing about Aud that day.
Above all, this is the definitive new edition of Kether, thoroughly adjusting the left-leaning balance that had been neglected until now and the pitch deviation that had not been fully corrected. Furthermore, the 2018 edition, which brought out the sound quality of both Aud and SBD to the utmost from the master, has been further refined and evolved from a modern perspective. No matter how many times I listen to it, the performance on this day is truly amazing!
