Description
The Forum, Inglewood, CA, USA 31st May 1973 PERFECT SOUND
Although it was released online in August, many enthusiasts may have thought, “Huh? Why isn’t it being released?” Barry Goldstein recorded Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on May 31, 1973. Yes, it’s John Bonham’s birthday show, everyone’s favorite. Of all the audience recordings from that day that remain in circulation, this is the only one that includes the finale, “Communication Breakdown.”
Two different recordings of this day had been available for sale prior to this. The first was “source 1,” which was included on the most famous and best-sounding TMOQ LP. The album, known as the classic LP “BONZO’S BIRTHDAY PARTY,” combined with the cover illustration of a pig jumping out of a cake, conveyed the greatness of the performance, but the fact that the first half of the live performance was not included was a drawback.
”Source 2″ first appeared on the lame LP “MORE FROM BONZO’S BIRTHDAY PARTY,” with its uninspiringly designed cover. It was the longest recording of the entire live performance, and became a mainstream CD release in the 1990s, starting with the Mud Dogs release. Even the soundboard was later unearthed, but too many cuts were missing, especially the scene celebrating Bonzo’s birthday. As a result, the value of each audio disc remained intact, an unusual situation in the year 1973, when SBDs were a thing of the past.
And “source 3” recorded by Goldstein was used only as a supplement to “Communication Breakdown” for the reasons mentioned above, and it was a sound source whose full picture could not be known until now. It was certainly very valuable in capturing the song, but it was undeniable that it felt inferior to the other two sources in terms of sound quality.
However, what was finally revealed from Goldstein’s master, which was released, was that the version used to fill in the song in previous items was significantly out of sync. Previous items containing “Communication…” may have given the impression of being “rough and thin,” but the sound quality of this master has improved dramatically. It’s amazing how such roughness has been eliminated, resulting in a truly natural, deep, and wonderful sound quality.
Goldstein missed the moment when Plant began singing “Happy Birthday” to Bonzo while changing cassettes. So, when the TMOQ source was patched in for this release to create the complete version, the difference in sound quality was barely noticeable. It was a clear demonstration of the improvement in sound quality from the master, and the quality even surpassed that of “Source 2.”
Of course, it remains true that the Aud best of the day was the TMOQ source, but the shocking fact that the Goldstein sound source had a quality that was close to it was revealed by this excavation. In addition, there are many places where the basic cut does not bite into the performance, and I am just amazed at the superb recording condition.
Therefore, the cuts have been edited with a heavy emphasis on “source 2,” which proves that the Goldstein recording, which had previously only been a “Communication Breakdown” supplement, has been reversed. The upper feeling this time is so overwhelming that it is no exaggeration to say that it has been promoted to Aud, representing Bonzo’s Birthday, instead of the TMOQ source, which had the fatal problem of missing the first half of the live performance.
And the splendor of this day has been talked about to an extent. It’s hard to believe that this was a live performance that was carried out while Jimmy was injured. In fact, it seems that he was able to concentrate on his performance precisely because of his injury. The improved sound quality of this recording makes us realize once again that this is one of the greatest performances produced in the US in the first half of 1973. In any case, we are amazed at how natural and easy it is to listen to. The third sound source capturing the birth of Bon is a shocking upgrade… Sorry to keep you waiting!
