Description
ZEP’s 1971 BBC live performance was released as a new compilation album, “BBC SESSION 1971,” but their other BBC period in 1969 was overlooked, let alone a new compilation. Unlike 1971, it was broadcast in mono, but there is also a valuable repertoire on the soundboard recording, which boasts the highest sound quality. The BBC sound source of that era was eagerly awaited to appear as a new compilation.
At that time, the familiar “Krw_co” broadcast master, the so-called “Pre-FM” stage high quality sound source, was released for each program. This is the literal new compilation that will be released this time, which was re-washed by a ZEP specialist for the limited press CD release and put together into one.
Originally, countless items have been released on the mono sound board because of the highest sound quality, but some of the items that have been popular with enthusiasts in recent years have been equalized to some extent, and more than ten years have passed since their release.
Compared to those past items, the “Krw_co” version has no equalization whatsoever, and the sound quality is so natural and calm that it is obvious at first listen.
This is most evident on “TASTY POP SUNDAE,” recorded on June 19th, which features rare numbers such as “The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair” and “Something Else.”
It is obvious when comparing these two songs with the past compilation items, but this time the sound quality is more natural and calm, like the BBC broadcast in 1969. Of course, the sound quality of various official releases that have been remastered with the general public in mind is out of the question.
”TOP GEAR,” also recorded in June, was one of the most notable BBC appearances in 1969 as it was a live performance in front of an audience. Listening to the natural and honest sound quality of this release, it becomes clear that in previous releases of complete BBC session titles, the bass was processed to sound louder.
And since there is no pre-FM version of Alexis Korner’s Rhythm & Blues, which is famous for its unreleased songs
, this one was recorded from an air check recording from that time. However, it is worth noting that the highlight of the album, Sunshine Woman, is rough but has improved sound quality compared to the previous version, which was a bit muffled. Compared to this version, the sound quality of the previous version seems much muffled.

The second disc also contains the acoustic version of “White Summer,” which Jimmy performed on BBC TV in 1970, with the best sound quality ever. It is literally a culmination of the performances that ZEP left behind on BBC from 1969 to 1970, and it is precisely because a ZEP specialist has handled it that it is a perfect compilation of the performances that ZEP left behind on BBC from 1969 to 1970.
ZEP’s appearances on BBC Radio in 1969 were concentrated in the first half of the year when the group was creative, and as a result, it was a very valuable record that allowed the group to listen to their attempts to create new songs such as “The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair”, “Something Else” and “Sunshine Woman” on the airwaves, but they also performed the unreleased “Whole Lotta Love”. This is a valuable record that captured ZEP in their aggressive mode at the time on the best mono soundboard.
Above all, enjoy the 1969 BBC with the release of a new compilation that enthusiasts around the world have been waiting for, along with natural and honest sound quality.
