By the dawn of the 1970s, Laura Nyro was a highly successful composer and cult performer, capable of combining Broadway and Brill Building pop, blues, doo wop, and soul in her imaginative and highly personal compositions, with an authentic New York spirit and a poetic inspiration too moody and visionary to captivate mainstream audiences. This unofficial double CD on the Homespun label captures her live in two vintage concerts, where her extraordinary three-octave mezzo-soprano voice is accompanied only by her faithful piano. The first show, dating back to 1971, was captured by KJHK-FM at the Hoch Auditorium in Kansas; the second, in 1970, took place at the Fillmore East in New York and is featured on the period radio program of the station WNEW-FM. In addition to covers of pop-soul classics, the setlists feature songs from the albums “More Than A New Discovery”, “Eli And The Thirteenth Confession”, “New York Tendaberry” and “Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat” and include his versions of hits such as “And When I Die”, “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Stoney End”, brought to success by artists such as Blood, Sweat & Tears, Fifth Dimension and Barbra Streisand respectively; the first CD also features two short interviews with DJ Tom Dooley.
