Description

Revenge is here!

The return of KISS after the unfortunate and tragic death of drummer Eric Carr.

With new drummer Eric Singer (known for his work with Black Sabbath, Badlands, and of course Paul Stanley’s solo tour), the band delivered their strongest album since Creatures of the Night.

You can hear the story of how the album came together on this week’s CD release ? but this DVD shows how KISS brought Revenge to the masses. Featuring unique and exclusive footage from the U.S. club and stadium tour, the UK tour, and the promotional tour across Europe, this collection has been compiled from the very best available sources.

The hugely popular KISS treasure trove video series, “KISSTORY,” presents its landmark 20th installment: the “REVENGE” era! From a tribute to Eric Carr to the reborn KISS’s world domination, this epic compilation spans approximately 228 minutes across three discs!!

This series is essentially a look at KISS’s untold history. It’s a compilation of rare footage, including little-known TV appearances, forgotten commercials, valuable interviews, film clips, and more—all gathered in the best masters. The series has archived 19 works, from the makeup era to the HOT IN THE SHADE tour, but this latest installment brings the Eric Carr era to a close and marks the beginning of a new chapter for KISS with Eric Singer. First, let’s start with the usual series overview.

●Makeup Era

・VOLUME 6-8: 1980 (UNMASKED Era)
・VOLUME 9: 1981/1982 (THE ELDER Era)
・VOLUME 10-12: 1982/1983 (CREATURES OF THE NIGHT Era)
●No Makeup Era
・VOLUME 13: 1983/1984 (LICK IT UP era)
・VOLUME 14: 1984/1985 (ANIMALIZE era)
・VOLUME 15: 1985/1986 (ASYLUM era)
・VOLUME 16-17: 1987/1988 (CRAZY NIGHTS era)
・VOLUME 18-19: 1989/1990 (HOT IN THE SHADE era)
*VOLUME 20: 1991/1992 (REVENGE era) ←★This work★

While the previous work, “KISSTORY 19 (Shades 2674),” closely followed the HOT IN THE SHADE tour, this work covers the period from 1991 to 1992. It begins with MTV’s coverage of Eric Carr’s illness and tribute, and covers the promotional activities for “REVENGE” featuring Eric Singer, from club tours to UK/European tours and US arena tours—and even the making-of with all takes of the last single, “Everytime I Look At You,” compiled into a 3-disc set of approximately 228 minutes. So, let’s introduce each disc.

●DISC 1: Chapter 1-2 “MTV’s coverage of Eric Carr (2 types)”
The beginning of DISC 1 is MTV footage related to Eric Carr, who passed away on November 24, 1991. This section includes news reports detailing his battle with illness, obituaries, and a tribute feature from “Headbangers Ball.” It marks a significant turning point in the series.

■DISC 1: Chapter 3 “Unholy PV”
This marks the beginning of the ‘REVENGE’ album era. First up is the PV for the lead single “Unholy,” recorded from the record company’s in-house master VHS.

●DISC 1: Chapter 4-13 “REVENGE Promotion TV Appearances (5 types)”
In May 1992, when ‘REVENGE’ was released, he appeared on a variety of TV programs for promotion. Here, we have recorded two programs from Australia, where the album had been released earlier, and three programs from Canada, all from VHS masters of airchecks.

First up, Australia. Chapter 4 features an early interview with Gene Simmons from the popular show “Paula Yates Tonight Live,” which aired on May 6, 1992. Chapter 5 is news footage from the “REVENGE” release party held in Sydney on May 11. The excitement surrounding the album’s release is palpable, almost like a local festival.

Next up is a Canadian TV program. Chapters 6-7 feature coverage by the Toronto TV program “CityPulse,” including footage of the meet-and-greet at the Heaven Club and an interview with Gene and Bruce. The tribute band ALIVE also makes an appearance. Based in Toronto, ALIVE was known among the many tribute bands for its “accuracy in recreating the original” and its “local popularity.” They didn’t just play songs; they focused on faithfully recreating KISS’s 70s stadium shows, including fire-breathing, blood-spitting, smoke guitar, and rising drum sets. At the time, it was the ‘REVENGE’ era, but ALIVE deliberately recreated the “golden age with makeup.”

Chapters 8-9 are also from Canadian music programs, specifically the KISS special on “Musique Plus.” Chapters 10-13 are “Pepsi Power 30,” featuring the complete version of an interview recorded during their club tour, with Gene and Bruce talking at length.

●DISC 1: Chapters 14-17 “European Live Footage & TV Appearances”
The stage shifts to Europe, with some fantastic live pro-shot footage! Chapters 14-15 feature the complete recordings of “I Stole Your Love” and “Deuce” from their May 21, 1992 performance at London Wembley Arena. This is pro-shot live footage filmed by M6 France.

Chapters 16-17 feature a rare performance from the Dutch music program “Countdown TV” on May 31, 1992. In addition to a humorous interview with the band, it also includes two songs with live vocals. Although only “God Gave Rock ‘N’ Roll To You II” was actually broadcast, this release also includes the outtake “Unholy” from the original studio master.

●DISC 2: Chapters 1-9 “MTV Special from the UK Tour”
DISC 2 starts with footage from the UK tour. The MTV “Headbangers Ball” special from the UK tour is the main feature of DISC 2. It is a complete version that luxuriously interweaves not only an interview with Vanessa Warwick, but also live footage and backstage scenes. Of particular note is the pro-shot live footage of the “April 24, 1992 Troubadour performance” (although the program is about the UK tour, the footage itself was filmed in North America). “Cold Gin” and “Detroit Rock City” are inserted into the program, making it a rare opportunity to see KISS exploding at close range in a club setting.

●DISC 2: Chapter 10-12 “Various European TV footage (3 types)”
Includes two TV commercials broadcast in the UK and one TV program from Sweden. The TV commercials are for the UK tour and for the soundtrack of the movie “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey”.

Chapter 12 is from the Swedish program “Diezel TV,” recorded in June 1992. It mainly consists of interviews, and was broadcast several months after recording.

■DISC 2: Chapter 13 “I Just Wanna PV”
Chapter 13 is the PV for “I Just Wanna.” Like “Unholy” on DISC 1, this was also recorded from an in-house promotional VHS of the record company.

●DISC 2: Chapters 14-19 “Metal Hammer Interviews”
The last part of DISC 2 is the Metal Hammer magazine interview special “Giants Of Rock.” Gene & Bruce and Paul & Eric talk extensively about “Crazy Crazy Nights,” “Lick It Up,” “Heaven’s On Fire,” “Forever,” and “Reason To Live” in this full broadcast version, interspersed with footage from throughout their careers.

■DISC 3: Chapter 1 “Domino PV”
DISC 3 starts with the “Domino” PV. This is another super beautiful version created from an in-house promotional VHS of the record company.

●DISC 3: Chapter 2-4 “North American Tour Related Programs (3 types)”
Chapter 2 is MTV footage reporting on the first day of the North American tour, the “Allentown (Bethlehem) performance on October 1, 1992”. It includes footage of the show and interviews with Paul and Eric.

Chapter 3 features footage from Canada’s “FAX TV” of their October 5th performance at the Montreal Forum. The live footage here is fantastic.

Chapter 4 is a retrospective report on KISS’s career titled “Triumph & Agony” from MTV.

■DISC 3: Chapter 5-18 “Everytime I Look At You: PV Special”
The main focus of DISC 3 is a comprehensive collection of footage related to the PV for “Everytime I Look At You,” the final single from ‘REVENGE’. Chapter 5 is the completed PV itself, a top-quality version produced on an in-house promotional VHS. This release allows you to enjoy all four PVs created for ‘REVENGE’ in the highest quality on an in-house promotional VHS from the record company.

Chapters 6 onwards are a collection of making-of footage, featuring all takes in their entirety. This is extremely rare, revealing for the first time the complete picture of the PV shoot, which has never been publicly released before, in beautiful master-quality footage. From Take 1 to Take 7, including angle footage from each member, such as Gene’s camera and Bruce’s camera, you can experience the entire filming process across 13 chapters. Take 7 even includes a performance scene by the chamber orchestra, allowing you to witness how the song’s grand scale was visualized. This is a must-see, treasured video for fans, which can be described as a “REVENGE version” of the method used in Vol. 18, which featured all takes of the making of “Hide Your Heart” and was well-received.
