This series is essentially a look at KISS’s untold history. It’s a compilation of rare footage, including little-known TV appearances, forgotten commercials, valuable interviews, film footage, and more—all gathered in the best masters. We’ve archived 18 works from their makeup era to their promotional activities in 1989, and this latest installment finally gets up close and personal with the HOT IN THE SHADE tour. First, let’s start with the usual series overview.

*VOLUME 19: 1990 (HOT IN THE SHADE Era Part 2) ←★This Release★
While the simultaneously released “KISSTORY 18 (Shades 2673)” traced the promotional activities of 1989, this Part 2 focuses on 1990. It begins with the music video for “Forever,” which topped the US Top 10, and includes the complete version of the legendary French M6 special “Boulevard du Rock’N Hard” and previously unreleased outtakes, footage of TV appearances from various tour locations, and a fan-made tour documentary that follows the band from rehearsals to the main tour, all compiled into a 3-disc set of approximately 232 minutes. So, let’s take a look at each disc.
●DISC 1: Chapter 1 “Forever: Complete Music Video”
DISC 1 starts with the music video for “Forever.” The promotional video for the hit single that made it into the Top 10 of the US singles chart is included from the record company’s in-house master VHS.
●DISC 1: Chapter 2 “Interview in Paul’s Office”
Next up is a unique location. This is an interview from the TV program “Youthquake” recorded in April 1990, and the filming location is none other than Paul Stanley’s office in New York. It’s rare footage of Paul looking relaxed at work.
■DISC 1: Chapter 3-17 “Boulevard du Rock’N Hard’s Legendary Special”
This is the highlight of DISC 1! “Special KISS” is a special program produced by the French HR/HM specialty program “Boulevard du Rock’N Hard”. Filmed during tour rehearsals in New York in March 1990, this is an approximately one-hour documentary special that aired on July 31, 1990.
This legendary TV special features rare live performances from the rehearsal studio, interspersed with clips from their past music videos, and interviews with the band members as they prepare for their tour. Starting with a live rehearsal of “I Stole Your Love,” viewers can enjoy a mix of old and new footage, including “Hide Your Heart,” “Sure Know Something,” “I Love It Loud,” “Thrills In The Night,” “Lick It Up,” and “Rise To It.” There’s even an a cappella performance of “Forever” interspersed throughout the interviews. This is a legendary TV special that has been talked about among KISS fans for many years.
Actually, the program itself can be seen on YouTube, but the quality of this version is on a completely different level. It is made from a VHS master recorded in France, and can be enjoyed in the highest quality currently possible. The visual beauty makes you realize the true power of the researcher’s deep archival knowledge.

■DISC 2: Chapter 1-8 “Unreleased Outtakes from the Legendary Special”
The main focus of DISC 2 is also the “Special KISS” special program of “Boulevard du Rock’N Hard”. However, this is not the program itself, but an outtakes compilation that includes plenty of unreleased scenes and raw footage.
The unedited segments not used in the broadcast version, sourced directly from the camera master, are of incredibly beautiful quality. Beginning with Gene and Paul preparing for their interview, the unedited interview is longer than the broadcast version and feels raw, as if they’re actually having a conversation. There are plenty of performance scenes, with Paul, Gene, Bruce, and even Eric relaxing and jamming with acoustic guitars. It’s looser than the carefully edited broadcast version, but it’s full of the band’s true selves.
●DISC 2: Chapter 9 “MTV New Music First”
Recorded in March 1990, this is the MTV program “New Music First”. Paul appears here as a VJ, introducing the latest music videos.
●DISC 2: Chapter 10-12 “TV Appearances During Tour (3 types)”
The “HOT IN THE SHADE Tour” is finally starting. In between, they make numerous promotional appearances. First up is the TV program “Youthquake,” recorded in May 1990. An interview was conducted in Dallas while accompanying them on tour. The camera also captures the subtle differences in attitudes between Eric Carr and the other band members, making it a valuable record that conveys the raw atmosphere of the band in the midst of their tour.
Chapter 11 is “Pepsi Power Hour” from the Canadian music program “Much Music”. It’s an interview with Paul, but Slaughter even makes a surprise appearance midway through. Chapter 12 is “SolidRok” by Canada’s “Musique Plus”. It’s an interview with Gene and Paul. Both are precious and beautiful footage created from recorded VHS masters.

■DISC 3: Chapters 1-24 “Documentary: RISE TO IT”
And finally, DISC 3 is the biggest highlight of this work! It’s a tour documentary of approximately 88 minutes edited and produced by fans, titled “RISE TO IT”. The biggest point is its quality. It generously includes professionally shot live footage and backstage scenes that are of official quality, and the beauty of the screen and the level of production go beyond what you would expect from a fan-made work. The film is so complete and well-made that it could be officially released as a full-length documentary of the “HOT IN THE SHADE Tour,” and it’s the kind of content that makes you want to call it “KISS EXPOSED” Part 2.
The tour begins with rehearsal studio scenes, then follows the band’s journey through documentary segments, including a history retrospective of KISS, behind-the-scenes footage of the “Hide Your Heart” video shoot, shots from the legendary Asbury Park club “The Stone Pony,” the Lubbock show (May 3rd), and the opening night (May 4th). The way live footage of songs like “I Stole Your Love,” “Deuce,” “Forever,” “Love Gun,” “I Was Made For Lovin’ You,” “God Of Thunder,” “Detroit Rock City,” and “Rock And Roll All Nite” are seamlessly interspersed throughout makes it feel like an officially produced road movie. Quality, quantity, rarity, and visual appeal… everything is perfect. It’s truly a highlight.
