Description
The wildly popular KISS treasure video series “KISSTORY” finally enters the “CREATURES OF THE NIGHT” era, heralding a new chapter for KISS!
This series is the hidden history of KISS. It’s a compilation of rare footage, including unknown TV appearances, forgotten commercials, rare interviews, and film footage, all compiled by the best masters. Up until now, nine titles have been archived, spanning the band’s golden age in the ’70s to the “The Elder” era, and this trilogy marks the final phase of the makeup era. Let’s start with the usual series list.
・VOLUME 1-5: 1974-1979 (Golden Age)
・VOLUME 6-8: 1980 (UNMASKED era)
・VOLUME 9: 1981/1982 (THE ELDER era)
*VOLUME 10: 1982 (CREATURES OF THE NIGHT era, part 1)
{December 1982: Vinnie Vincent officially joins}
*VOLUME 11: 1983 (CREATURES OF THE NIGHT era, part 2)
*VOLUME 12: 1983 (CREATURES OF THE NIGHT era, part 3) ←★This album★
As you can see, the “CREATURES OF THE NIGHT” era is a massive three-volume set, including this one. While “KISSTORY 10 (Shades 2590)” featured promotional footage from the night before Ace’s departure, and “KISSTORY 11 (Shades 2591)” featured the early stages of the 10th anniversary tour after Vinnie joined and TV specials, this volume covers the entire tour from the middle to the final performance – in other words, the end of the makeup era itself. DISC 1 contains 19 TV footage from various locations on the tour, and DISC 2 features the entire final concert in the makeup era, all professionally shot. Let’s take a look at each one individually.
●DISC 1: Chapters 1-5 “TV Reports from the Mid-US Tour (5 Types)”
DISC 1 is a roughly 60-minute digest collection of TV footage from each location on the “CREATURES OF THE NIGHT Tour” in chronological order.
The first section features TV reports from “January 18, 1983 Syracuse (15th performance),” “January 21, 1983 Portland (17th performance),” and “February 2, 1983 West Palm Beach (27th performance).” The Syracuse performance report, in particular, offers three different types of footage for enjoyment.
●DISC 1: Chapter 6-11 “A Week of TV Appearances (6 Types)”
This work features footage from various locations, running parallel to the tour. Particularly impressive is the week from “February 18, 1983, Bloomington (32nd performance)” to “February 23, Detroit (37th performance).” During this period, there were consecutive TV appearances, and this work is packed with six types of footage.
What’s more, the content is incredibly rich. The report on “February 18th Bloomington,” which kicked off the rush of appearances, features not live footage but an exposé documentary by a religious group that claims KISS are messengers of the devil. The content, which claims to “uncover the true identity of the devil’s band,” is so absurd that it’s almost laughable when viewed today, but it is a valuable testimony of the era that vividly depicts the social reaction surrounding KISS at the time.
Be sure to check out the report from the following day, February 19th in Sioux Falls. The late Wendy O. Williams, who was the opening act, also appeared. At the time, the four members of KISS and Ace were participating in the album “WOW.”
●DISC 1: Chapter 12-16 “A diverse collection of footage from the end of the tour (7 types)”
This is footage from March, when the tour moved to the South. This includes not only TV reports, but also a wide variety of footage. The “March 9, 1983 Dallas Performance” includes a TV commercial master announcing the concert and the finest professional shots. The latter is for news programs, but was recorded on an unedited leaked reel, not broadcast. Enjoy the precious multi-camera professional shots.
Also valuable is the 8mm footage of the “Phoenix, March 28, 1983” performance, which was nearing the end of the tour. This is a maniac treasure that allows you to enjoy the visual beauty of the perfect transfer from the master reel.
The US tour ended on April 3, 1983. Here you can also see the TV shows “Freeze Frame” and “Entertainment Tonight,” which they appeared on immediately after the tour. Particularly interesting is the Canadian show “Freeze Frame.” Paul and Jean appear and answer questions in an interview, expressing their belief that “KISS in makeup is the right way. We never take our makeup off.”
■DISC 1: Chapter 19 “First South American Performance Pro Shot”
Two and a half months after the end of their US tour, they will perform their first South American performance. The finale of DISC 1 is the first day. In other words, it is a multi-camera pro shot of KISS’s first South American live performance, “June 18, 1983, Maracanã Stadium.” Although it only includes one song, “God Of Thunder,” broadcast on “Globo TV News,” the visual beauty created from the master is completely official. It is an ultra-excellent video with historical importance.

■DISC 2: “Pro-shots of the final performance from the makeup era”
DISC 2 is a completely different, long video that is sure to impress. It is a pro-shot video from the performance in Sao Paulo on June 25, 1983. This live performance is historically extremely important. Not only was it the final day of their first South American tour, but it was also the last stage of the “CREATURES OF THE NIGHT” era. That’s right, it was the final concert from the makeup era!
At first glance, the single-camera shot from a distance looks like it’s of the audience, but it’s actually professionally shot by a local São Paulo station. Towards the end of the video, there are also shots of angles other than the audience and close-ups of the band members.
And best of all, it’s great that it’s almost a full show. Speaking of South America in 1983, there’s also the classic pro shot “RIO DE JANEIRO 1983,” which is about 44 minutes long. In contrast, this work is about 70 minutes long, with plenty of solos from each artist. A particular highlight is “I Love It Loud,” which is played twice. This song, which was a big hit in Brazil, had the audience going wild, and it was played once during the main show and again as an encore.
