KISS – THE FIRST LIVE IN JAPAN (1CD)
Koseinenkin Kaikan, Osaka, Japan 24th March 1977
The fateful night when Japan and KISS first met. This only record of that night, polished by “GRAF ZEPPELIN,” is being reissued with new artwork!!
This release permanently preserves the performance from March 24, 1977, at the Osaka Kosei Nenkin Kaikan. It’s a legendary audience recording that perfectly captures the first day of KISS’s first visit to Japan. This show marked KISS’s first encounter with Japan, and this original master is the only recording that captures this day. Since its initial release on the Power Gate label’s “THE FIRST SHOW IN JAPAN,” no rival recordings have emerged. This release features that unique record, meticulously mastered by “GRAF ZEPPELIN.” It’s a reissue of “DEFINITIVE OSAKA 1977 1ST NIGHT,” which sold out and went out of print two years ago.
KISS’s visit to Japan in the 1970s was a major event in the history of Western music in Japan. [A hidden treasure of Japanese Western music history that has conveyed the first day of their first visit to Japan]
This is the overall picture of the 70s visit to Japan by the original four members. They visited Japan twice, in 1977 and 1978, but most of the recordings are from the Nippon Budokan. This album is not just a masterpiece from their first night, but also an incredibly valuable record of their performances in regional areas.
Of course, mere rarity doesn’t make something legendary. The true brilliance of this work lies in the superb sound quality. A robust core pierces straight through the clear atmosphere, with vivid detail. You feel the spectacle of their first visit to Japan in the applause of the audience, which is strangely distant, yet you are not bothered by the close-up screams. There are occasional radio broadcasts recorded with microphones in the history of rock, and this work is just like that. The vivid listening experience is more like an FM broadcast than a live recording.
[GRAF ZEPPELIN’s ultimate live album]
This work is the pinnacle of such legendary recordings. It is a masterpiece among masterpieces, meticulously mastered by “GRAF ZEPPELIN,” who has worked on countless vintage recordings. The stereo image is precisely centered with strict phase correction, and the midrange is neatly organized with balance adjustments. Even the minute periodic noise originating from the tape has been removed after carefully listening to each and every applause at the venue. Each individual detail is so subtle that it might go unnoticed, but the accumulation of these details transforms the overall naturalness and density into something entirely different. It’s not just the precision of the meticulous work, but also the aesthetic of relentlessly pursuing the original sound to get as close as possible to the sound that must have been heard at the actual location… it’s a finish that is truly akin to the restoration work of cultural artifacts.
The night KISS first faced a sea of black hair. They burst onto the stage with an energy that seemed to shake off any anxiety about how the Asian audience, who didn’t speak English, would react, and were ignited by an overwhelming enthusiasm, building excitement with each song. The fact that even the changes in their emotions are conveyed so vividly is thanks to the quality of this recording.
This live album captures the first night of KISS’s first visit to Japan in a way that is different from the standard pro-shot recordings, and the incredibly emotional night of their first meeting. This pressed CD preserves this extremely valuable legendary recording in the best possible sound for posterity. It is truly a cultural heritage in itself, and is proudly reissued here.
★A legendary audience recording from “March 24, 1977, Osaka Kosei Nenkin Kaikan”. The only recording that documents the historic full show of “the first night of their first visit to Japan”, polished to the highest level by the meticulous mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. Phase correction has brought the stereo image, which was slightly shifted to the left, perfectly centered, and the harshness in the mid-range has been greatly reduced by balance adjustments.
