Description
Taken from the radio recording of the time, this unofficial CD on the Laser Media label reproduces a small part of a date of what has rightly gone down in history as the “Three Icons Tour”. Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison are the formidable protagonists of the show that on May 17, 1998 saw them perform for the second consecutive night on the stage of the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington state. The tracklist selects four songs each: the singer-songwriter from Duluth opens the concert with three old classics plus “Cold Irons Bound” from the then recent “Time Out Of Mind” in which he is accompanied by Bucky Baxter (pedal steel, electric slide and mandolin), Larry Campbell (guitar and backing vocals), Tony Garnier (bass) and David Kemper (drums and percussion). Mitchell, who offers “The Crazy Lies Of Love” from her new album “Taming The Tiger”, presents herself with an extraordinary band including Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Larry Klein on bass, Brian Blade on drums and Michael Landau on lead guitar, while Morrison, protagonist of the final part of the performance, takes up the title track and “Fire In The Belly” from the recent “The Healing Game” also performing the Elvis Presley hit “Aint That Loving You Baby” and “Lonely Avenue” by Ray Charles together with a big band that includes Pee Wee Ellis and Candy Dulfer on saxophones, Fred Wesley on trombone, Matt Holland on trumpet, Johnny Scott on guitar, John Savannah on keyboards, Nicky Scott on bass, Ralph Salmins on drums, Geoff Dunn and Liam Bradley on percussion and Katie Kissoon on backing vocals.
